Let You Fade

"Let You Fade" is the title of a song on the deluxe edition of From Zero and one of three new songs included on the release, with "Up From The Bottom" and "Unshatter."

Background

In regards to new music, Colin Brittain in September 2024 commented that Linkin Park was already working on new songs that would possibly be released in 2025, saying, "There's also couple of songs that we haven't released yet that are may or may not come out next year, that we're still working on, they are really amazing."[1] Just over a month later, at the end of October, between legs of the From Zero World Tour and just before the European shows in November, the band was posting various photos on social media at Mike's home studio. Mike included a video of Emily in the vocal booth in these series of posts.[2]

Around the release of From Zero, Mike's comments about the album's length indicated the band likely had more songs from the sessions as well, saying, "By the way -- just to set your expectation, the "running time" of the album is not long. It's a compact little fireball. I wanted it so good and so concise that you'd want to listen to it multiple times in a row."[3]

With the announcement of the deluxe edition of the album, the band's website said, ""Let You Fade" was a song that began during the From Zero sessions but found its final shape in sessions after the album's release."[4]

Mike added, "It was mostly the song, the melodies and chords and things, words, were written during the From Zero sessions and then we completely changed the shape of it. Like rewrote the music in December (2024)." He said good ideas were the reason they changed it, with Dave adding, "Certain songs just take longer than others just to get to a place where you want to share it. I think "Let You Fade" was a song for me, where early on there was something there. I remember early on the first time when Mike played the first version of it for me, I knew there was something special I was connecting with. It took a while, a couple different versions of it, to get it to a spot where you're now ready to share it with the world."[5]

On April 21, 2025, Mike said "Let You Fade", along with "Overflow" and "Up From the Bottom" were his current favorite songs he had made with the new lineup of the band.[6]

The week of the release of "Let You Fade", Mike said, "I don't think the fan base is ready for LET YOU FADE"[7].

The day before the song's release, Colin said, "LYF is probably my favorite From Zero era Linkin Park song. Can’t wait for yall to have it"[8] and described the song as "embracing."[9] Mike said, "From Zero Deluxe is out tomorrow, and our new song LET YOU FADE is out tonight. It’s one of our favorites, and we can’t wait for you to hear it"[10]

Upon the song's release, Mike said, "It had a few different versions but they all felt "almost there." The closest one was piano and vocal. But I really felt like the opposite would be more interesting. So we tried making it loud."[11] He added, "I like all the different ways the lyrics to LYF are hitting people."[12]

The lyrics for the song drew immediate connections to Chester amongst music fans, causing Mike to say, "Songs mean different things to different people. I want to give everyone room for their interpretation of the lyrics to "Let You Fade," at least for now. We don't need to decide on the "right" meaning behind this song. Just let the song's meaning come from the listener. All of your interpretations are welcome. Feel free to share them below; there are no wrong answers. Your version of the meaning doesn't have to be everyone's version. It can be about different things to different people."[13]

Mike added in summer 2025 that while many interpreted the song as a tribute to Chester, "it wasn't written that way. People even pulled out the fact that there's numbers in the song that align with Chester's birthday. I was like: "whoops, that's not intentional.""[14]

Release

"Let You Fade" was the last song to be unveiled from the Deluxe Edition of From Zero, so Linkin Park on release week teased "our brand new song" "Let You Fade."[15]

Live

Linkin Park debuted "Let You Fade" live the day after the song's release, at the Welcome to Rockville show in Daytona Beach, Florida. Emily played guitar on the song, making it her third song on guitar with Linkin Park, following "Over Each Other" and fellow bonus track "Up From The Bottom."

Before performing the song, Mike mentioned that the tour across the United States had been a tour of many "firsts", meaning a lot of new songs had been debuted live - "Up From The Bottom", "Cut The Bridge", "Stained", and "IGYEIH." He then said, "We were thinking that maybe tonight could be one, is that alright with you?" before the band debuted the song. The track replaced "Waiting For The End" in the setlist, a very rare omission from the set, and appeared in the encore after "Papercut."

Lyrics

I’m supposed to be running
I’m just catching my breath
Saying congratulations
Terrified of what’s next
Everything is exploding
Twenty hours no sleep
Three o’clock in the morning
Lying there in the street

Breaking our backs for a pile of sand
Just to have it all falling out of our hands
Maybe it all gets lost in the end but

I’ll remember you
No matter where our ways may take us to
And even when the memories slip away
Time will test you
I won’t let you fade

This is supposed to feel different
Why do I feel the same
Tryna get with the rhythm
I’m all over the place
And the faces in my head say that
What was next might just be the last
We don’t want to admit that we are never going back
Revisiting the distance from the present to the past
And don’t know how we went from where we were to where we're at

Breaking our backs for a pile of sand
Just to have it all falling out of our hands
Maybe it all gets lost in the end but

I’ll remember you
No matter where our ways may take us to
And even when the memories slip away

Breaking our backs for a pile of sand
Just to have it all falling out of our hands
Maybe it all gets lost in the end

I know I’m the one that you wanna forget but

I’ll remember you
No matter where our ways may take us to
And even when the memories slip away
Time will test you
Time will test you
Time will test you
I won’t let you fade

I won’t let you fade
I won’t let you fade
What was next might just be the last
We don’t want to admit that we are never going back (I won’t let you fade)
Revisiting the distance from the present to the past
And don’t know how we went from where we were to where we're at (I won’t let you)
