"And One" was one of three songs co-produced and mixed by Mudrock and Mike Shinoda for the Hybrid Theory EP. The song was written by Mike Shinoda, Joe Hahn, Brad Delson, Chester Bennington, and Rob Bourdon. Kyle Christener is credited for bass on the original EP but his name was removed from subsequent issues. This happened because his bass tracks weren't used in the EP.[1]

Background

When performing the song live in 2000 and 2001, Linkin Park would mention that "And One" was the very first song they wrote with Chester.[2] Phoenix said that "And One" was a basketball reference - it was the working title of the track and it stuck. Joe replied that it was a shoe brand (spelled "AND1"), implying that was the origin of the song's title, as well as a basketball league.[3] During an interview to LPLive, Rob McDermott, the band's first manager, read the tracklist of an early Hybrid Theory EP which consisted of "Esaul", "Cure For Mr. Hahn's Itch", "High Voltage", "By Myself", "Kids", "And One" and "And Two". He explained that "And Two" was "the outro of it."[4]

After the original release of the EP, Linkin Park continued working on "And One" for inclusion on their debut studio album, Hybrid Theory, but it didn't make it to the final tracklist. The song appeared on two demo CDs, the Hybrid Theory 8-Track Demo from January 2000 and Linkin Park - Demos From 02-2000 from February 2000. However, neither CD contains the version of the song that Linkin Park performed live (for more information, see "Live" below.) While "Carousel" and "Part Of Me" both went through changes on their studio versions, there is no evidence to date that Linkin Park ever recorded the "live version" of "And One" in studio.

The song was recorded in the studio sessions for the debut album. In Jeff Blue's book "One Step Closer: From Xero to #1: Becoming Linkin Park", he explained that recording for Hybrid Theory began on March 7, 2000 at NRG Studios. Rob's drum tracking began on March 14 and he tracked drums for "And One" that day.[5]

Meme

On March 24, 2020, Linkin Park (Mike, Dave, and Joe) reacted to the (previously unreleased) San Diego 2001 show stream on YouTube.[6] When the performance of "And One" happened, all three band members did not know the name of the song and spent the next few minutes guessing at what it could be. Due to Dave asking, "Is this Carousel?", the phrase instantly became a sensational meme for Linkin Park fans. Due to this, on April 20, 2020 when the individual songs were being uploaded to YouTube, Linkin Park promoted the "And One" video on social media by saying, "Is This Carousel? Head over to YouTube to find out."[7]

Live

Being one of the band's oldest song, it is likely that the band performed this song during the time in which they were Hybrid Theory. During a Reddit AMA with Mike in August of 2014, he claimed: "We played those songs [from the Hybrid Theory EP] a ton when the band name was "Hybrid Theory," and once we had a whole album to play, those kinda just went away."[8] "And One" is on the earliest known setlists, being performed mid-set throughout 2000.

The live version of the song is different from the original. According to Brad, they took the outro and made it the bridge and pulled the rhythm tighter.[9] Mike has never rapped the ending verse to "And One" found on the studio recording live.

The song was dropped sometime mid-way through the Ridin' High Tour, only returning sporadically throughout 2001. It's final appearances were during Projekt Revolution 2002; it was dropped mid-way through the tour in favor of "It's Goin' Down", which was being rehearsed during soundchecks. The song was always performed mid-set.

Lyrics

Album Version

Where should I start
Disjointed heart
I've got no commitment
To my own flesh and blood
Left all alone
Far from my home
No one to hear me, to heal my ill heart, I

Keep it locked up inside
I cannot express
To the point
I've regressed
If anger's a gift, then I guess I've been blessed, I

Keep it locked up inside
Keep my distance from your lies

It's too late to love me now
You have never shown me
It's too late to love me now
You don't even know me

Breaking a part of my heart to find release
Taking you out of my blood to bring me peace
Breaking a part of my heart to find release
Taking you out of my blood to bring me peace

Breaking a part of my heart to find release (Break)
Taking you out of my blood to bring me peace (Me)
Breaking a part of my heart to find release (Down)
Taking you out of my blood to bring me peace

Keep it locked up inside
Keep my distance from your lies

Breaking a part of my heart to find release (Break)
Taking you out of my blood to bring me peace (Me)
Breaking a part of my heart to find release (Down)
Taking you out of my blood to bring me peace
Breaking a part of my heart to find release
Taking you out of my blood to bring me peace
Breaking a part of my heart to find release
Taking you out of my blood to bring me peace

Keep my distance
Keep my distance
Keep my distance
Keep my distance

Spit drips from the jaw of the witless witness
Cryptic colloquialisms shift your mid rift
Dog paddle through a bog of shadows and smog with my
Thought catalog: analogue rap battle log
Keep my distance, and fear resistance, hurt by persistence
The twisted web of tangled lies
Strangles my hope to waste and numbs the taste
And I'm forced to face these hate crimes
Against the state of being
Feeling the weightlessness press me to the ceiling
Reeling around rooms
Riding a bubble of sound
Tuned to the frequency making your
Chest shake with every boom
Involuntary muscle contraction
Ignoring your neck's breaking
Musical gas fume euphoria
The sound pounds to make the dead flush
To hand you a head rush with read thoughts and said stuff
