Summary
Once The Hunting Party World Tour came to a close in November 2015 with a couple of festival and private appearances, Linkin Park took a whole year off of touring for the first time in their careers to focus on recharging and writing their next album, One More Light. While no proper shows were played in 2016, Chester and Joe did make an appearance at a Mercedes corporate event in Shanghai in June, performing 'Burn It Down' with live vocals and a pre-recorded instrumental (that, somehow, messed up during the performance).
Linkin Park unleashed 'Heavy' in February 2017, subsequently kicking off the One More Light cycle in a unique way with a series of promotional events that largely saw the band performing acoustically, with mostly just Mike and Chester making various appearances in different cities to answer questions and perform a few songs. The first of these events happened on the day 'Heavy' released at NRG Studios on February 16, 2017, where Mike, Chester, Brad, and special guest Kiiara (who features on the song) performed 'Crawling,' 'Heavy,' and 'Burn It Down' in stripped down formats for the first time, Mike singing his rap verse in the bridge of 'Burn It Down' and Kiiara providing harmonies on the songs she wasn't originally a part of. The studio version of 'Heavy' made its live debut on The Late Late Show With James Corden a few weeks later on February 27. The band also performed 'Invisible,' which was premiered on the show in June.
After performing a few songs at Whisky A Go Go in West Hollywood for Mercedes-AMG's 50th anniversary (clips exist of them performing the rare reggae version of 'Burn It Down' and 'A Place For My Head'), the band started their proper promo appearances with a quick set at Warner Bros. Records, the three performing 'Talking To Myself,' 'One More Light,' and 'Heavy.' This was the first time the first two of those songs were ever heard once clips appeared on social media. Mike and Chester then continued around the world themselves, performing songs like 'Heavy,' 'Crawling,' 'Battle Symphony' (for the first time), and 'What I've Done' across Toronto, Amsterdam, Paris, London, Hamburg, and Tokyo across March and April 2017. Along the way, they made time to perform various collaborations with different creators, namely YouTube in London, where they were interviewed by boyinaband and performed 'Heavy' with singer Sofia Karlberg, and with guitarist Waxx in Paris where they performed a special version of 'Heavy.' The whole band appeared in Germany for the ECHO 2017 awards in Berlin, where they performed 'Heavy' with Kiiara once again.
After over a month of rehearsals at Third Encore, Linkin Park properly kicked off the One More Light World Tour in South America, with a pair of appearances at the Maximus Festival in Argentina and Brazil and headlining shows in Chile and Peru, the latter of which they had never visited before. Kicking off with their performance at the Maximus Festival in Buenos Aires, Linkin Park brought a brand new setlist opening with a new mashup intro featuring 'Roads Untraveled' and 'Fallout' followed by 'The Catalyst.' The band debuted a handful of songs at the first stop of the tour, including the world premiere of 'Talking To Myself,' the full band version of 'Battle Symphony,' and the live version 'Good Goodbye' that features an alternate verse in place of Stormzy. Brand new intros debuted for 'One Step Closer' and 'What I've Done,' and a brand new version of the 'Castle Of Glass' experience debuted featuring part of an unreleased remix at the end. The full version of 'Leave Out All The Rest' returned to the setlists for the first time in six years, now as a new version with an extended guitar solo intro and outro. The piano version of 'Crawling' that Mike and Chester had played throughout the promotional shows also made its way into the setlist. The setlist for the two headlining shows in Chile and Peru were a bit longer and had a different intro. 'Talking To Myself' opened the show following the mashup intro, to which the crowd reacted so powerfully to it in Chile that it influenced the band's decision on making the song into a single later on. 'Waiting For The End' was added back into the setlist with a new intro featuring 'Remember The Name,' and 'Breaking The Habit' also made a return. Both 'Invisible' and the studio version of 'One More Light' made their live debuts at this show.
One More Light came out a week after the South American leg ended, and Linkin Park thusly made a couple more promo appearances in mid-May. One of these was a performance for Good Morning America in New York, where the band performed their only proper acoustic set ever in the subway station of Grand Central Station. The band flew back to Los Angeles to perform a highly emotional 'One More Light' in dedication to Chester's close friend Chris Cornell who had just passed away on Jimmy Kimmel Live before performing a few more songs for fans. The band played their album release show in Las Vegas, taking over Depeche Mode's social media pages to promote the album and sharing clips of the show. Chester sang part of the band's 'Strangelove' during the extended bridge of 'Bleed It Out' at this show for the only time ever.
After a few weeks off, Linkin Park embarked on the One More Light European Tour, mostly consisting of various festival appearances across the continent in countries like France, Italy, Germany, Hungary, Sweden, and more. The setlists largely stayed the same as the South American Tour, with a few additions at headlining shows and new rotation spots. The spot originally held solely by 'Somewhere I Belong' at the end of the set began changing every show, switching between 'Somewhere I Belong,' 'A Place For My Head,' 'From The Inside,' and 'Points Of Authority.' At headlining shows in Berlin and Amsterdam, the band debuted 'Nobody Can Save Me' and 'Sharp Edges.' The band closed the tour out in the United Kingdom, including two nights in London and a final show in Birmingham. As there was no opening act for these shows, the band played a longer set, adding a second rotating slot and playing an extra one of the four heavier tracks that they had been playing previously throughout the tour. The addition of this slot and the already impressive length of the setlist made these the longest sets the band had ever played until that point. The tour was meant to end in Manchester, but the show was cancelled due to a terrorist attack at an Ariana Grande concert at the venue a few months prior in May. Chester addressed this in a speech at the Birmingham show: "We share some of our love and our prayers for the families and the victims of the tragedy of Manchester arena, my heart has never been broken so much on the day I found out that tragedy happened and since that day I have been wearing these little ear rings with the bees in them, I know that's a symbol of strength and hope for the city of Manchester and I am going to keep these in until all this nonsense stops and we can start loving each other, until we can stop hurting each other because we believe in something different to the person standing next to us, the one thing that cannot be defeated is love, right?" The band played their last show of the tour on July 6, 2017. A compilation of live recordings from throughout this tour was released later in the year as One More Light Live.
On July 20, 2017, the world learned of the tragic passing of Chester Bennington. The band's subsequent One More Light North American tour, due to kick off only a week later, was cancelled entirely. The band held off on cancelling their trio of November dates in Japan for months, but ultimately decided in early October that it would not be possible for them to play the shows. They issued the following statement: "To our wonderful fans in Japan and our brothers in ONE OK ROCK: We have been looking forward to being with all of you, but unfortunately cannot play our previously scheduled performances in Tokyo. Until now, we have not communicated about our November shows because we sincerely wished to play, even in the wake of Chester's passing. We are working each day to grieve, heal, and work towards stepping on stage together without our dear friend. We are so grateful for your love and support. Our sincere appreciation for your kind understanding. -LINKIN PARK."
Linkin Park played one final show together with the surviving original five members on October 27, 2017 at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, California for the Chester Bennington memorial show, LP & Friends: Chester Bennington Celebration. In a nearly three hour set spanning 32 songs and all of their albums, Linkin Park was joined throughout the night by guests from throughout the music industry, with everyone from pop artists like Alanis Morissette, Steve Aoki, and Bebe Rexha to metal legends like members of Korn, Avenged Sevenfold, and System of a Down joined the band for a night of performance, streaming the show live on YouTube to those who could not attend. While performing all of the band's hits from the years, a number of very special performances were made. The live debut of 'Roads Untraveled' was played toward the start of the show, after the most complete version of 'Robot Boy' that the band had ever played and a mashup of 'Iridescent' and 'The Messenger' introduced the show. Some artists had a chance to perform their own songs, like Alanis Morissette performing a new song called 'Rest' and Blink-182 performing their classic 'I Miss You.' Mike Shinoda took a moment to perform an unreleased song called 'Looking For An Answer' all by himself on the piano. After the career spanning setlist, Linkin Park took one final bow before going on an indefinite hiatus...
