"With You" is the third track on the album Hybrid Theory. This song was a collaboration with the Dust Brothers, who provided additional beats and sounds for the track. It was one of the first songs released from the record through the band's website.

Background

In Jeff Blue's book "One Step Closer: From Xero to #1: Becoming Linkin Park", he explained how "With You", originally titled "Dust Brothers" came about. Jeff Blue was roomates with the stepfather of Mike Simpson of Dust Brothers. He sent him Xero demos hoping the Dust Brothers would produce something for the band, but they passed. In September or October 1999, Jeff called the Dust Brothers again to see if they were interested in producing Hybrid Theory (band). Mike Simpson heard the new demo and told Jeff, "I'm blown away. The sound and singer have definitely improved. You all should come over to the studio in Silver Lake." After the meeting, he said, "Just Brad and Mike came. We were hoping to meet your new singer. We played them a lot of tracks. Basic stuff. Like thirty-second loops. They picked out one they liked, so I gave it to them to work on for our album. It was funny, I think my partner was trying to impress your rapper with the new digital mixing board he just got." After meeting with Chester the next week, Simpson said, "Chester's cool. I'm in to have the guys do a song for our album." Mike then came in with his version of the track which had him rapping, but it didn't have Chester on the song. Simpson liked the track, so Jeff had Mike and Chester work out a full demo, which Jeff ended up liking so much that he started putting it on demo CDs immediately, and then got permission to include the song on Hybrid Theory, promising that the band would do another track later on for the Dust Brothers album.[1]

Around the same period "With You" was conceived, the band worked on a second song with the Dust Brothers. This song was revisited in 2001 for inclusion on the producers' debut album, which remains unreleased. On May 14th, 2020, Mike talked about this second song on his stream, saying, "We didn't really... we started something and then we sent it to them. And then they got really nasty about it, to be honest, back in the day. And then they were not cool about it. So we had a bit of a falling out. But they did work on "With You" and that was cool. They did a great job on that."[2]

During a Yahoo chat with fans at hob.com, Mike Shinoda explained how "With You" came together: "We met the Dust Brothers when we were looking for somebody to produce the album, and we decided after meeting that we'd try a song together. They gave us a track with drum loops and different Moog and synth sounds, and we ended up mostly centering in on those Moog and synth sounds, coupling them with guitar and live drum."[3][4]

When the band met Don Gilmore, the producer said "Points Of Authority" and "With You" were the only Linkin Park songs he liked.[5] The band felt comfortable enough with those two tracks to make them available for download at their website in early 2000.

Composition

Due to Phoenix being out of the band at this time (1999 to October 2000) to tour with The Snax, he did not record bass on any songs on the Hybrid Theory EP or Hybrid Theory. Brad Delson recorded the bass on "With You", "Points Of Authority", "Crawling", "Runaway", "By Myself", "In The End", and "Pushing Me Away".

Demos

The first demo for "With You" is titled "Dust Brothers" and is featured on the Hybrid Theory 6-Track Demo CD from April 25, 2000.

There is a different vocal take by at least Mike on the demo while Chester's vocals sound similar to the final take. Joe's scratching is not present on the intro or the bridge. The entire ending of the song after the bridge is different, with Chester singing "I can't wait to see tomorrow" over the repeating "with you" lines.

After April 2000, there is a second demo, after the name change to "With You". It features a variety of different things in this version, which was released on the Ozzfest 2000 sampler, on hybridtheory.com for free download, and on the Hybrid Theory (Unmastered Studio Finals 5/7/00) CD. Some of the differences include a completely different mix, a guitar harmonic at the end of each verse being different, and different echoes on Mike's vocals.

Remix

Linkin Park released a remix of "With You" on Reanimation in July 2002 titled "Wth>You". The track was remixed by Joe Hahn and features guitar by Mike Shinoda. There is a guest verse on the song by Aceyalone.

After Reanimation was released, Linkin Park for years would perform a version of "With You" live that contained the strings from the "Wth>You" remix in the verses.

  • The back of the CD says all the songs were "recorded live at Alphine Valley Music Theatre, Milwaukee, Wis. June 9, 2001 and at Deer Creek Amp. in East Troy, Wis. June 11, 2001". However, there's a audience recording of the June 9 show which doesn't sound like the recording on the CD, and Linkin Park didn't play on June 11. An Epic Records spokesperson confirmed the album was recorded at the Milwaukee and Indianapolis shows,[6] meaning the dates on the liner notes are wrong. The song was likely recorded on June 12 since there was a "Deer Creek Amphitheatre" in Noblesville.

Live

"With You" was a staple in Linkin Park setlists throughout the Hybrid Theory touring cycle. The song is well known, especially for its early performances, for Chester screaming "Come on!" as the heavy part of the intro kicked in. In 2000, the song was often performed as a mid-set song, almost always preceding "Runaway", a pairing of songs that would survive throughout the years. The song slowly crept its way up to the setlists as the year progressed, finally settling in a position third-to-last in the set, before "One Step Closer" and "Runaway". As 2001 rolled around, "With You" remained in its late-set position in the beginning of the year, with an added extended scratch intro by Joe added to the song. On the band's first tour of the year, the Street Soldiers Tour, "With You" opened the show for the first time, with a brand new show-opener intro to assist it. This intro would be used for a good half of 2001. The song remained as the main show opener for a majority of 2001, where it finally traded places with "A Place For My Head" starting at their night performance at Rock im Park, where "With You" returned to its late-set position. The band experimented with songs to open their shows on the Ozzfest, where they eventually settled on "With You" being the show opener once again. This time, the band used a variety of new show intros, with some being used throughout the rest of 2001. On the Ozzfest, the band briefly used an intro featuring a remix of "My December", before using an intro featuring Guns N' Roses' "Welcome To The Jungle" for a majority of the tour. At the show in Tinley Park, Illinois, an ambient intro (the "SHORT Interlude") that would usually precede "Crawling" was performed before "With You" for the first (and only) time. At the show in East Troy, Wisconsin, "With You" was preceded by the "LEE Interlude" which would usually come before "Papercut" for the only time. The following tour, the Hybrid Theory European Tour, featured "With You" as the opener for the entire tour. The tour began with the pre-song "Welcome To The Jungle" intro, but saw many several intros experimented with. At the show at BBC Radio One's Lamacq Live, "With You" featured an intro that was simple Joe scratching, similar to what he did at the very beginning of the year. The next show in Manchester, England featured another scratch intro, but a bongo sample was used over it. This is the only time that intro has been used. The rest of the tour utilized the "Docklands Intro", named after the venue it debuted at in London, England. The band used this intro for the rest of 2001. As 2002 rolled around, "With You" continued to open shows, where the studio version was performed instead of a show opener being used.

"With You" returned on the Meteora touring cycle, assuming a position late in the main set (third-to-last). In 2003, the "With You" and "Runaway" duo was broken up, but both songs were still performed. The verses of the song featured the instrumental of its Reanimation counterpart, "Wth>You". The song continued to be performed late in the main set, moving down to the middle of the setlist on Projekt Revolution 2003. "With You" returned as the opener of the setlists in late 2003, for the U.S. Holiday Radio Shows. It did not have a show intro, but was still performed Reanimation-style. Starting at these shows, the "With You" and "Runaway" duo was revived, with "Runaway" transitioning directly from the outro of "With You". It continued to open shows in the beginning of 2004, where a show intro, entitled the "Meteora Tour Intro" was played before the song. On the Meteora International Tour, "With You" was replaced by "Don't Stay" with a its new "Gacela Intro" as the opener of the shows. "With You" also received a new intro, which was just a short extended intro featuring "Wth>You". The song was not performed in 2005, but returned for the Summer Sonic Tour in 2006, where it featured a short version of the "Meteora Tour Intro".

"With You" was not performed for the entirety of the Minutes To Midnight and A Thousand Suns touring cycles. However, it returned during the Living Things touring cycle, where it featured a brand new extended scratch intro and a new scratch outro. "Runaway" also returned as its partner, also being performed for the first time in years (since 2007!). "Runaway" was dropped on the Honda Civic Tour, but "With You" stayed strong. It remained in all three sets, and even opened Set C with a brand new show opener intro featuring the main theme from "Game Of Thrones". The song remained to be consistently performed throughout all of the Living Things World Tour in 2012 and 2013.

The song returned again on The Hunting Party World Tour, though less frequently now. The song returned on the European Festival Tour with the its partner, "Runaway", but both songs were shortened. In "With You"'s scenario, it lacked the first chorus and second verse. "With You" did not make it into both sets on the Carnivores Tour (in full), while "Runaway" served its transitional part into "Wastelands" throughout the entire world tour. "With You" rotated spots in Set B with "Points Of Authority", while the song's first verse was featured in the extended intro of "Until It's Gone". The song was completely dropped in 2015.

Lyrics

Album Version

I woke up in a dream today
To the cold of the static, and put my cold feet on the floor
Forgot all about yesterday
Remembering I'm pretending to be where I'm not anymore
A little taste of hypocrisy
And I'm left in the wake of the mistake, slow to react
So even though you're so close to me
You're still so distant
And I can't bring you back

It's true the way I feel
Was promised by your face
The sound of your voice
Painted on my memories
Even if you're not with me

I'm with you
You
Now I see / keeping everything inside
You
Now I see
Even when I close my eyes

I hit you and you hit me back
We fall to the floor, the rest of the day stands still
Fine line between this and that
When things go wrong I pretend the past isn't real
Now I'm trapped in this memory
And I'm left in the wake of the mistake, slow to react
So even though you're close to me
You're still so distant
And I can't bring you back

It's true the way I feel
Was promised by your face
The sound of your voice
Painted on my memories
Even if you're not with me

I'm with you
You
Now I see / keeping everything inside
You
Now I see
Even when I close my eyes

I'm with you
You
Now I see / keeping everything inside
You
Now I see
Even when I close my eyes

No
No matter how far we've come
I can't wait to see tomorrow
No matter how far we've come, I
I can't wait to see tomorrow

With you
You
Now I see / keeping everything inside
You
Now I see
Even when I close my eyes
