"Until It's Gone" is the seventh track and second single from Linkin Park's sixth studio album The Hunting Party. The song was premiered by Zane Lowe on BBC Radio 1 on May 5, 2014.[2]
Background
"Until It's Gone" was based around the idea of building to a drop, an idea that Mike Shinoda got from working with Steve Aoki on "A Light That Never Comes".[3] Shinoda also revealed the meaning of the song on Twitter, stating "Although it can be about regret (the usual meaning of "don't know what you've got until it's gone"), UIG has an alternate meaning. As a parent, your child won't grow into their potential until they leave the nest. You don't know what you've got until it's (your're) gone"[4] The song is rather unusual in the context of Linkin Park since parts of the song are in 6/4, 4/4, and there is even a 2/4 bar after the first chorus. A few other sections of the song have odd numbers of measures in them. Rob Bourdon, however, describes "Until It's Gone" as having a more straightforward drum part, similar to things he'd played on previous records.[5] The ending interlude is also one of the last remaining trap elements on the album, as the band felt those elements felt "silly" in the context of the album.[6]
The label tried to get the band to release a song like "Until It's Gone" or "Final Masquerade" as the lead single for The Hunting Party, while the band had settled on it being "Guilty All The Same".[7] Obviously, the band won that battle, as "Guilty All The Same" was released as the lead single. "Until It's Gone" was also initially destined for another release. On the first three Transformers movies done by Michael Bay, Linkin Park was prominently featured on the soundtrack, providing "What I've Done", "New Divide", and "Iridescent" to the films. Originally, "Until It's Gone" was mixed for inclusion on the soundtrack of Transformers: Age of Extinction as revealed by Andy Wallace, who was hired to mix both "Guilty All The Same" and "Until It's Gone", known as "Thanksgiving" at the time.[8] The song was not included in the movie or soundtrack, though it was used in promotion for the video game tie-in to the film, Transformers: Rise Of The Dark Spark.
Remix
On December 24, 2014, several members from the Linkin Park Association community teamed up to release a remix album of The Hunting Party titled Viscera. The album was later released to the LP Underground on June 18, 2015 after the band received the full rights to distribute the album. The remix of "Until It's Gone" was done by Simple Automaton. The instrumental version of the remix was released February 28, 2015.

Fan Footage Video
On June 10, 2014, Linkin Park headlined the Alfa Romeo City Sound Festival in Milan, Italy. Before the show, the band asked fans to use their camera or phone to record Linkin Park performing "Until It's Gone" in its entirety in landscape (sideways) so the band could put together a special live video of the song. The videos should be uploaded to FanFootage by 23:00 CET on Friday June 13th. Everyone who uploaded a video were entered into a draw to win a signed CD of The Hunting Party and a Linkin Park t-shirt.[13]
The best bits of the videos were used on a live music video from the Milan show which was unveiled by the band on July 16, 2014. An interactive version was also available on FanFootage over the 24 hours following its release, allowing the fans to choose their own camera angles.[14]

Live
"Until It's Gone" got its live debut at KFMA Day 2014 with a new mashup intro, featuring elements of "New Divide", "No More Sorrow", and "The Catalyst". It also featured an extended transition outro that led directly into "A Light That Never Comes". "Until It's Gone" opened the encore through the entire European summer tour except for Download 2014, where it was played after "Numb". This was also the first time it was played without its transition outro, since "A Light That Never Comes" was dropped for that show. This was also the last time the song was played with its extended intro. The short run of promotional shows featured "Until It's Gone" four times, once at Red Bull Sound Space, twice at iHeart Radio Theater, one of which had the transition outro into "A Light That Never Comes, and once at the mtvU Fandom Awards. Starting with the Carnivores Tour, "Until It's Gone" was shortened, dropping the first chorus and the first half of the second verse, creating a "hybrid verse" of sorts with the first verse and the second half of verse two. It was always played in the encore at shows that featured an encore, but no longer opened it. Mike also started rapping verses of "With You", in Set A, and "Points Of Authority", in Set B, over an extended intro. In 2015, the song was dropped, and hasn't been played since. According to Chester, it was dropped for political reasons that were beyond the band's control.[15]

Lyrics
A fire needs a space to burn
A breath to build a glow
I've heard it said a thousand times
But now I know
That you don't know what you've got
Oh, you don't know what you've got
No, you don't know what you've got
Until it's gone
Until it's gone
Until it's gone
I thought I kept you safe and sound
I thought I made you strong
But something made me realize
That I was wrong
'Cause finding what you got sometimes
Means finding it alone
And I can finally see your light
When I let go
'Cause you don't know what you've got
Until it's gone
Until it's gone
Until it's gone
Until it's gone
Until it's gone
Until it's gone
Until it's gone
Until it's gone
'Cause you don't know what you've got
Oh, you don't know what you've got
No, you don't know what you've got
It's your battle to be fought
No, you don't know what you've got
Until it's gone
'Til it's gone
'Til it's gone
[Baby noise]
A fire needs a space to burn
A breath to build a flame
And you have been my candle light
So well contained
'Cause you won't know what you've got
You won't know what you've got
Until it's gone
By burning you at every end
I tried to keep control
Now buried in the very flame
I could not let go
