"Goodbye Cow" is the ninth track on the album Dropped Frames, Vol. 3 by Mike Shinoda.
Background
"Goodbye Cow" is a song by Mike Shinoda made during the 2020 global COVID-19 pandemic.
In March 2020, the global pandemic created by the COVID-19 coronavirus caused communities to quarantine at home. During this time, Mike Shinoda decided to start live streaming online and inviting fans to watch him create new instrumental music.
"Goodbye Cow" was a track made by Mike on June 22, 2020 under the working title "6.22 Drama in the Toy Shop."[1] This was a track Mike made himself on "Freestyle Friday" without any fan redemption choices.
He said, "I made this little sound today, I grabbed this... it's called "Clog Bells" out of one of the Native Instruments libraries. Yes, "Drama in the Toy Shop", you've gotta name your sessions. Sometimes the session name can just add some spice. So here's our clog bells; I grabbed some drum rack sounds. I've got some dirty piano. I think the original sample is a piano note on a really muted piano but once you put the same note over all of the keys, it sounds way different. Kind of cool. Here's the same piano but a much higher note was sampled. Here's some synthy strings, very 80s, and then this plucky bass thing."
An hour into the stream, Mike started recording from his own synthesizers. He said, "That was great, I loved that. That was the Moog Voyager." Then, he spun the Wheel of Destiny to see what he should do with the song. It landed on "FIYAH", leading Mike to say, "The wheel thinks the beat is good, but you guys want it to get weirder, so maybe we do a weirder section here. Let's see what happens. Let me see."
Later, he said, "I think what I'm going to do, on the cow solo, I'm going to an EchoBoy delay and turn it up, up, up and then let's do like a space echo kind of situation. So the more you turn the feedback up on most delay plugins or delays in non-plugin form, the unit over here is a tape delay so it actually records the sound on a tape and the tape loops and that's why the delay happens because it records and plays in a circle. The more you move the knob, the shorter the space between the playback and record head is. The more you turn it up, the more it feeds back and it gets this effect... I'll do it on a digital one on the screen... if you turn it up enough, it starts feeding back on itself whether or not you're putting anything into it. It's regenerating its own noise."
Mike changed the title during the stream when the track evolved. To him, it sounded like a cow kidnapped by aliens since the alien jokes were recurring in the chat. The chat always mentioned aliens during the the weird electronic sounds often used by Mike. A fan suggested the title "Cattle Symphony" during an Animal Crossing stream on June 19, 2020 and Mike liked it. but he ended up keeping "Goodbye Cow." Near the end of the session, Mike commented, "The aliens are lurking right here. He's trolling the fence, he's rolling by the other cows that are stuck inside the fence. This is when the aliens are coming down for sure. It's the MOOOOOOOG keyboard."
On September 18, during his Twitch stream, Mike commented about the part from 01:28 saying, "This part of the song reminds me of an old funk band called Parliament, because of the strings sound. Parliament is like... that's a George Clinton... and all the G-funk, west coast, gangster shit. He's an influence."
