"Dust Code" is the third track on the album Dropped Frames, Vol. 3 by Mike Shinoda.

Background

"Dust Code" is a song by Mike Shinoda made during the 2020 global COVID-19 pandemic.

In March 2020, the global pandemic created by the COVID-19 coronavirus caused communities to quarantine at home. During this time, Mike Shinoda decided to start live streaming online and inviting fans to watch him create new instrumental music.

"Dust Code" was a track made by Mike on April 30, 2020 under the working title "4.30 dust code."[1]

This was a track Mike made himself on "Freestyle Friday" but he did take an idea from a fan for it.

He said, "The idea was, do what I've been doing but add some real left turns into stuff that's more guitar driven, metal and hardcore and stuff. So we'll see how plays out today. I don't know what I could guarantee but we'll try. I don't know if this chord progression is best for that but I'll give it a shot. I found a couple of things together today, this one started as prehistoric VHS down here under ambient, and I took that and edited it a little bit, played around with the sound of it. I also grabbed a tension instrument called big kalimba - it doesn't resolve on the four count so it would just keep going and eventually would resolve. What I liked about that is it felt a little bit like Tears For Fears or something, but it could also be like Tool, but I was like, "Oh, that's a weird place where those two things cross over together." I also had this other sound down here (afterschool). Those and drums, so let's get into this!"

On September 21, 2020, Mike read a question in the chat during his stream, asking about the meaning of the title and he said: "What is a Dust Code? That's a good question! I don't even know how I came up with that... Did I actually see something with those words? No, I just made that up. Anna jokes that I'm better at making up names of things, or names of characters, than she is. I don't know if that's true. I mean, she's certainly not bad at, but... Making up names is hard."
