"Heavy" is the sixth track and first single from One More Light. It was written in collaboration with Julia Michaels and Justin Tranter with Emily Wright being responsible for vocal recording[1] and features guest vocals by Kiiara. "Heavy" marks the first time Linkin Park shared the lyrics of a song online before its official release[2] and their first song to feature female lead vocals. It is one of Brad Delson's favorite songs on the album, along with "Sharp Edges".[3] The single was released three days after the lyrics, on February 16, 2017. Internally, the song was attributed to the band name "Lucky Pups" to prevent early leaks.

Background

The title of "Heavy" was first seen in a picture posted (and immediately removed) by Joe Hahn on April 28, 2016 of Jon Green with a songboard behind him.[4] The song was written by Mike Shinoda, Brad Delson and Chester Bennington in collaboration with Julia Michaels and Justin Tranter.[5] Nashville songwriter, producer and engineer Emily Wright, who was announced to have contributed to the album in a November 2016 live feed on Facebook,[6] was in charge of vocal recording.[1]

Chester originally sang the whole song, but the band felt like it needed another perspective. It was Joe who brought the idea up to the band, saying, "It could be interesting to maybe experiment with the vocals on the chorus, like bring in a female vocalist to add harmony would be cool. Just trying to think... I don't know if those are good directions, but there's something that feels out of the box for us; it could give it that dynamic it needs."[7]

Mike explained, "if you hear another voice on it it would make it feel like it's coming from more than one person." They initially wanted Julia Michaels to sing on the song, but she declined, so they contacted Kiiara, who was introduced to the band by Zane Lowe when he was invited to the studio to hear the new music, and asked her to sing on it.[8][5] Her vocals were recorded over a 7 hour session in December 2016,[9] a few days before Linkin Park left the studio. She has mentioned Linkin Park as one of her influences and has been listening to their music since she was 5 years old.[10] The band sent her some exclusive merch in the following month.[11]

In an interview with Zach Sang, Mike Shinoda explained that the song is a core part of the album and described the message of the song with the proverb "when it rains it pours", talking about how "Heavy" is about the culmination of a singular, dramatic event and several smaller, less important problems.[12] He later described a day that Chester had come in to the studio and exclaimed that he felt overwhelmed by a myriad of problems. Mike felt that the key to the song was the line "If I just let go I'd be set free", as that lyric contains the idea of personal responsibility, which solidified the song's message and theme.[5]

As for the style of the song, Mike said, "A misconception about our process is that actually Justin and Julia’s contribution with us was only melodic and verbal. A lot of people say ‘Oh, the song Heavy sounds like a pop song – it must be because of Justin and Julia’. We worked the chords and the melodies and the vocal melodies with them, but I did the production. So, if it’s too poppy for you, that’s my fault."[13]

Speaking to Genius[14], Mike said about the song, "Up until this record, we always wrote our own stuff. And on this album, it occurred to me that there are all these songwriters out there that people work with. All they do is write a song. I wasn't really interested in somebody writing a song for us, but I just know that there is all these different people with all these different ideas and honestly, different approaches. So on this album, for the first time, we opened the door and let other people come in the studio. We thought if it doesn't work, we'll just go back to the way we're doing it, but it turned out that we worked with a couple people that we really liked. Justin Tranter and Julia Michael, are most known for their pop stuff with Justin Bieber or Britney Spears, but they're actually versatile artists. They can really write a catchy corny pop song, but they can also write a deep and meaningful, you know, something of another genre. And when we sat with them, it was me and Chester and Brad, from our band, and then Julia and Justin. And I remember we came in and everyone was like "Oh, how's your day going," or whatever, and he goes, "Oh, fine," and there was kind of a beat. And were just like, "OK," and we just started talking. And a few minutes later he was like, "You know what? No, I'm not fine. Let me tell you what's going on in my life." And he just unloaded on us."

About Kiiara, he said, "I know Zane Lowe had put us together. He sent me a message and said, "Have you heard about her." And I said, "Yeah, I like that song," and he goes, "I had her on my show and I asked her who her favorite band or artist is," and she said Linkin Park. And I said "That’s really crazy. I would have never guessed that." And he said, "Yea!" so he kind of connected us and we hung a little bit but didn't record anything. She came down to the studio and played me some music. I played her some music and that was it. So then, months later we were working on "Heavy" and the idea came up to have a female vocalist on the song and we were like "Oh! Maybe we should call her.""

Chester said about the song, "Going through this album, everything from battling with addiction, battling with relationships, battling with family members dying, dealing with suicide attempts. Dealing with kids that are growing up. Every day seemed to bring some new stack of bullshit that I had to deal with. Bringing this stuff up Mike would be like, "God, dude, this is what’s going on in my life or my friend's life or my family is dealing with this," or "I know people going through that," and then it was like, "Bro! Like dude, this is what I'm dealing with." And in this case, that was the type of conversation that started most of these sessions. On this particular day, we got into this conversation, and I believe it was Mike that got up as we were kind of talking. As I started talking about some stuff, Mike gets up and starts playing the chord progression and is just kind of going through it. If I recall correctly, right away Julia went, "I don’t like my mind right now. Stacking up problems that are so necessary." And we were like, "That’s it!" And it was just like "Boom!""

About the opening line of the song, Chester said, "To me, an opening lyric is so important. Number one, because it's your first chance to hook somebody and tell them this is why you should listen to my story. Right? But the other thing is that with a rap verse, you've got 16 bars or times however many verses. You got all this real estate to cover, right? What makes it a challenge on a song like this is that you have a lot fewer words. So every word counts more. And if you get the words just right, I feel like there’s a poetry in them in a way to portray your train of thought that’s bigger than the sentence that you would have said, you know?

When we were talking about what was going on, I'd be like, "Dude, I don’t know. Sometimes I find myself getting into these patterns of thinking. Sometimes I find myself getting into these behaviors that I have." I do all this stuff to try not to do it, and I find myself just doing them again. It's like I'm compelled to fuck up things in this certain way. Or make things more difficult or just get trapped. It’s like going through that kind of conversation and then getting into it. I think everybody in their own way can relate to that. I mean, for myself, that comes with being an addict. There's a pattern of thoughts. There's this compulsion, this obsessive thing that happens in my brain and I can't get out of it. And that leads to a lie. And that leads to isolation and that leads to all these other things that mess with my life. And so if I just go "Why do I isolate," and I don't look at all the other things that cause me to do that then I'm only focusing on a symptom of the overall problem.

That's one of the things that most people, in their own way, whether they're addicts or just whatever they're going — I think most people can relate to being stuck. If you're in a grieving process of losing a loved one, and you can't stop thinking about them not being there, you can get into that way of thinking. Even though you're talking about two totally different things, that one line, "I don't like my mind right now, stacking up problems that are so unnecessary," I think everybody could feel that way, whether it's a single mom and I got bills and I got responsibilities and I got kids to raise and I want to have a life. Just getting caught up on the "I don’t have a life and I have all this other stuff going on" can cause an avalanche of nonsense that goes on in your brain. And for me, the worst conversation for me to have is the one I have about myself in between my two ears."

Chester said about the chorus of the song, "We messed around with a lot of different keys. For the first time, on this record, we wrote the song in a key and then we'd sing through it. And if there was any part and that felt like we took a little bit too much effort, we'd maybe re-address — maybe the key's not right so we'd mess with the key and find this sweet spot.

The one that made it sound like, "Woop!" There's like a tuning fork that's not sonic. It's a physical thing. I'll be in the room looking at everybody while I’m singing, and all of the sudden everyone goes, "Hm." Either hair will stand up or people's ears or their eyes — nobody knows everybody else is doing it, but it's like an instantaneous "woop!" All of the sudden the energy changes and that's the one. So we look for that on these songs. People are really used to me coming out like, 'BRUHHHH!' You know, like, really intense all the time. Even on songs in the past when I'm singing a little more — "Crawling" for example, the verses on that, I think, were probably the closest thing to what I did for this song. Where I kind of was suggested to revert to that little kid that's hurt. And so I internalized, like "OK, now I’m that little kid and I'm going to sing this song. I'm feeling this way," and I tried to project that into the performance. While on this one, I wanted to feel defeated and contemplative. We all talked about it when we were doing it: It should be more conversational. Like, I'm sitting down with my head in my hands going, saying it in my mind, "I don't like my mind right now." You know, "stuck in a problem that are so unnecessary.” Kind of sing that a little bit, but that's why it sounds so deflated. And then when it gets to the chorus, "I’m holding on." That's already going to feel pretty big, but coming out of that small and vulnerable place of lyrics and performance that really taps into that emotion, it just feels like "Boom!" You’re already feeling that desperation, so it's not like a victorious "I’m holding on." Really, the victory comes in when the lyrics turn from "If I could just let go, I'd be set free. I'm holding on.”"

About the bridge, Chester said, "There’s something totally narcissistic as well. And that's the thing. This song is about ego. Like, when it all boils down to the dirty nasty truth of it all, is the thing that gets all of us caught up is our projected self image or lack of. That's the epitome of self-loathing as well — and rubbing it in someone's face at the same time. Like, "I know I'm not the center of the universe, but you keep spinning around." For me, that's the addict and the co-dependent. That's the person addicted to the thing. That’s the person who's addicted to the person who's addicted to the thing."

Mike added about the bridge, "Songwriting is more than just the lyrics, right? Like, we stuck the bridge on the second half of the second verse. Which is unconventional because usually it goes verse, then a chorus. Or you go verse, into pre-chorus, then the chorus. What we did on this song is we stuck that line in the area in between the two as if it's just going to be part of the song there. And then you can turn around and right after the chorus, you come right back to it and it's a big bridge and it climaxes. And so, from a songwriting perspective, that's when the math adds up. And you go, "Oh, that math is good!" That feels really good. But part of the thing that makes it work is that it is a little bit of a rap line. There's something technical about it in a way.

Remix

An official remix of "Heavy" was created by Dutch DJ Nicky Romero.[15] It was premiered during his set at Florida's Ultra Music Festival on March 25, 2017. He stated "It wouldn't be Ultra Miami if there was no new music... this is the first time I've played the final version."[16] The studio version was premiered on April 2nd during Nicky Romero's weekly radio show Protocol Radio.[17]

A second remix was created by Canadian musician, producer and songwriter Eric Disero, who had previously worked on remixes for Mutemath and Passenger.[18][19] On April 22, he announced he had a big release coming that week.[20] It turns out that this release was his remix of "Heavy".

Music Video

Lyric Video

On Februrary 16, 2017, Linkin Park posted the lyric video for "Heavy" to coincide with the announcement of One More Light. The video was done by Aaron Hymes, an associate director and video producer from Columbia Records[21] who had previously worked on videos for Mastodon, The Used, Parkway Drive, and Calexico.[22]

The lyric video was unlisted for a few days after the release of the official music video.

Music Video

On January 31, 2017, ads were placed on Casting Networks Los Angeles looking for actors to play "therapy patients" and doubles of Kiiara and Chester Benington as well as a stuntman or fighter for a "Linkin Park ft. Kiiara" music video,[23] indicating their collaboration would be released as a single. The description of the video read "interesting characters meet in a therapy session!"[24] Shooting took place from February 6 to February 7 with director Tim Mattia. It was done in partnership with Mercedes-AMG, featuring a Mercedes-AMG GT.[25] The video was released on March 9, 2017 at 10am EST / 7am PST.

Chester described the video as incredibly violent and intense, more so than any other music video he had filmed. He explained that, in the video, he flung lamps into television sets, had fist fights with himself and others, and got to break a bunch of stuff.[26] Mike Shinoda said it is one of his favorite videos Linkin Park have done.[27]

Live

Linkin Park

"Heavy" was performed live for the first time for a Facebook live stream at NRG Studios. The song was stripped down, with Mike playing the piano, Brad playing guitar, and Chester and Kiiara providing vocals. The song got its full band debut on The Late Late Show with James Corden, with Kiiara joining the band for the performance. The stripped down performance returned for a private show at the Warner Bros Records building, but Kiiara did not join the band for the song. Mike and Chester began doing promo shows later in March in North America and Europe where they performed "Heavy" together in a further stripped down piano version. A special version of the song was performed after the promo stop in Paris, France, where Mike and Chester joined French musician Waxx for a special looping cover which was uploaded to Waxx's YouTube channel.[29] At the promo show in London, England, Swedish / Moroccan singer Sofia Karlberg joined Mike and Chester to perform the song. Kiiara rejoined the band for another performance of the song during the ECHO Awards in Berlin, Germany on April 6. Mike and Chester played the song for NTV in Japan later that month.

At the first official show of the One More Light World Tour, "Heavy" was played near the end of the shortened setlist, and was put in the encore for the full version of the setlist. A new version of the stripped down rendition of the song was played for a small, intimate show at Grand Central Station featuring the full band. The song was intended to be played and broadcast on Jimmy Kimmel Live, but was replaced by "One More Light" following the death of Chris Cornell, a close friend of Chester's. The song remained in its end-set position for the European Tour, but it was given a short piano intro at the band's show in Amsterdam. At the following show, in Madrid, Mike rapped part of the second verse of "When They Come For Me" during an extended intro to the song while Brad played guitar. A new intro with Brad finger picking the chords of the song on guitar was debuted at the band's Rock Werchter performance, and was carried through to the end of the tour. "Heavy" was played at the Chester Bennington celebration event in the middle of the set with Julia Michaels, who helped write the song, and Kiiara, with Michaels taking over Chester's parts.

Mike Shinoda

Mike added a piano version of "Heavy" to the set during his solo tour in Köln, and he would add the song in during the piano section of the set somewhat frequently through the rest of the cycle. In Zurich, Mike started to play the song, but he felt that the crowd wasn't feeling it enough so he replaced it with "Numb".

Kiiara added "Heavy" to her setlist for her own tour starting with her show in the Philippines on March 3. She included a vocal backing track for the performance.

Promotion

On February 3, 2017, the band started posting a series of 8 videos on their official website in promotion of the new album and the single. The first video featured Mike Shinoda playing a stripped down piano version of "Heavy" while singing the lyrics while the third video showed the band working in the lyrics for the song with Emily Wright.[30] In the video, Mike says "The whole point of the song is, you're holding on to something that's like pulling you down, right?" The sixth video shows Joe Hahn suggesting female vocals for the chorus and the seventh shows Chester Bennington recording vocals with a release date in the end: February 16, 2017 at 7am Los Angeles time. The final video shows Kiiara recording her vocals and a short preview of the final song. "Heavy" was premiered at KROQ,[31] Linkin Park's hometown radio station where they commonly debut their lead singles.

On February 20, a sign with the lyrics "Why is everything so heavy?" was sent to the Official Linkin Park Ambassadors so they could take pictures with it and post them on social media. The sign was sent to Street Team members two days later. Linkin Park members, Kiiara and members of other bands also joined the campaign.

Lyrics

Album Version

I don’t like my mind right now
Stacking up problems that are so unnecessary
Wish that I could slow things down
I wanna let go but there’s comfort in the panic
And I drive myself crazy
Thinking everything's about me
Yeah I drive myself crazy
Cause I can’t escape the gravity

I'm holding on
Why is everything so heavy
Holding on
So much more than I can carry
I keep dragging around what's bringing me down
If I just let go, I'd be set free
Holding on
Why is everything so heavy

You say that I'm paranoid
But I’m pretty sure the world is out to get me
It’s not like I make the choice
To let my mind stay so fucking messy
I know I'm not the center of the universe
But you keep spinning round me just the same
I know I'm not the center of the universe
But you keep spinning round me just the same

I'm holding on
Why is everything so heavy
Holding on
So much more than I can carry
I keep dragging around what's bringing me down
If I just let go, I'd be set free
Holding on
Why is everything so heavy

I know I'm not the center of the universe
But you keep spinning round me just the same
I know I'm not the center of the universe
But you keep spinning round me just the same
And I drive myself crazy
Thinking everything’s about me

I'm holding on
Why is everything so heavy
Holding on
So much more than I can carry
I keep dragging around what's bringing me down
If I just let go, I'd be set free
Holding on
Why is everything so heavy

Cover Versions

As soon as "Heavy" was released, many bands and independent artists took advantage of the initial negative reception regarding the style of the song to create rock and metal versions of it. Those include covers by Our Last Night featuring Living In Fiction,[33] Fame On Fire & Rain Paris,[34] Phedora,[35] First To Eleven,[36] TeraBrite,[37] Crimson Apple,[38] Endigo featuring Maya Fennec,[39] Flatirons Community Church,[40] and Bloodywood.[41] Chester Bennington commented on this last one in particular saying it "sucks ass".[42]

Some softer covers of the song have also surfaced like the versions by In The Loop,[43] Coretheband,[44] BearPhonic,[45] Antonette and Zero Alias,[46] and Lies Of Love featuring DJ Devasto.[47] The latter being released before Linkin Park even released the full original song.
