Projekt Revolution 2002 is a the title of a live DVD release by Linkin Park in October 2020, included in the Hybrid Theory (20th Anniversary Edition). It is named after the band's January and February 2002 tour by the same name in support of Hybrid Theory.
Background
After an exhausting almost two years touring for Hybrid Theory and performing 165 shows in 2001 alone[1], Linkin Park wrapped up their touring cycle for the album with a nineteen show headlining tour in the United States, followed by a one-off show in Mexico and a benefit club show in Hollywood, CA. Projekt Revolution 2002, the band's first arena headlining tour in the U.S., featured their friends Cypress Hill, Adema, and DJ Z-Trip.
Composition
Filming for the Projekt Revolution 2002 DVD took place during the last two shows of the Projekt Revolution Tour - in San Diego, California on February 23rd, and the following day, February 24th, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Most, or all, of the audio used for the release appears to be from Las Vegas, as evidenced by the band's commentary throughout the show. For example, Mike's introduction to the show before "With You" ("Yeah Las Vegas, how you guys doin'?"), Chester talking as "Runaway" starts ("How y'all doin' tonight? Last night of Projekt Revolution, we want to see you guys going crazy out there") and Chester's thank you after "One Step Closer" ("Alright, we want to take the time to thank everybody here Las Vegas") all mention the city. Additionally, the recording of "My December" used on the "Somewhere I Belong" single in 2003 is taken from the San Diego show and does not match the version released on this DVD.
The video is spliced between the two shows. The band wore similar clothing at both shows, but with different logos on their shirts except for Chester who wore the same thing. There are a few moments where editing is obviously from two shows, like at the end of "Points of Authority", Chester is against the railing on the side of the stage singing to the crowd but a second later on stage singing. For the most part, this is more seamless than the Live in Texas DVD where it is much more obvious about it being from two shows.
The DVD was directed, edited, and produced by Bill Berg-Hillinger, who is Anna Shinoda's dad. Bill also did the trailer for the Hybrid Theory 20 release, which was widely praised by the Linkin Park fanbase. Interestingly, Bill also shot one of the cameras on the DVD back in 2002 as well at these two shows. The audio mix was done by Ethan Mates in 2020, who is a longtime collaborator (engineer) with Linkin Park and has mixed a lot of live releases by the band over time.
Almost all of the band's talking to the crowd and between song breaks were cut entirely from the DVD, including the break before the encore. Show reports indicate the crowd was very rowdy at this show. Chester stopped the band after "A Place for My Head" ended and both he and Mike gave a speech to the crowd to pick everyone up on the floor that was falling down. There is extended footage from the filming of the two shows on the accompanying DVD in the box set, titled "The Sequel To The DVD With The Worst Name We've Ever Come Up With", including the load-in and production set-up, the band's soundcheck, the meet & greet with the Linkin Park Underground, footage outside the venues, and more.
Linkin Park's setlist for Projekt Revolution 2002 was very similar to what they had performed in 2001 while touring for Hybrid Theory. The familiar opening run of "With You", "Runaway", and "Papercut" remained in place, something the band would return to using in 2004 on their arena tour as well.
There were, however, several unique songs in this setlist. "Step Up" from the Hybrid Theory EP was in the fifth spot of the set, having been debuted the previous fall and only played a handful of times before this tour. Following a delayed start to their European Headline Tour due to the September 11th terrorist attacks, the band was able to perform on September 12th in Berlin, Germany where "Step Up" debuted in the encore of the show. It stuck around in the shows for the last five tours for Hybrid Theory - the European Headline Tour, Family Values Tour, Countdown to Revolution, U.S. Holiday Radio Shows, and Projekt Revolution 2002. "Step Up" was played with a lot of back-and-forth interaction between the band and the crowd as they extended the bridge to get the crowd to raise their hands in the air. The ending was also extended for Joe to scratch on. Despite this, the song still came in at its normal 4 minute length since Linkin Park opted to not use the vocal breakdown by Chester during the bridge that is on the studio version.
Another unique track in the show was "It's Goin' Down", Mike's song that he wrote for The X-Ecutioners in 2001 referred to by Mike as "the first Fort Minor track" in later years. It was debuted on this tour in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania on February 7, 2002 after being soundchecked for the first seven shows of the run. At its debut, it was played with DJ Z-Trip, but the first show of the filming in San Diego, CA for the DVD had The X-Ecutioners on stage for the song - the only known time that they joined Linkin Park live for it. The X-Ecutioners actually joined Linkin Park the previous fall at the Video Music Awards on "One Step Closer" as well. The DVD of Projekt Revolution 2002 only has the Las Vegas, NV footage, which has DJ Z-Trip and Riff Raff stage.
In the encore, Linkin Park performed "My December" with Phoenix on cello, which was only done near the end of 2001 after the Family Values Tour and on this tour for Projekt Revolution. Mike performed the song on an MPC sampler, which he traded out for a keyboard starting the next year in 2003. Joe Hahn had a solo that carried over from 2001 as well, referred to as the "Blow Your Mind" interlude. On "By Myself" in the encore, Chester sang the song on DJ Z-Trip's platform at the back of the arena floor, in the face of the crowd.
Perhaps the biggest notable moment of the 2002 show was Linkin Park's cover of "My Own Summer (Shove It)" by the Deftones, a band they grew up big fans of. The first LPU Newsletter mentions the cover, "In addition, LP covered "My Own Summer" by the Deftones, a song LP proudly announced they used to rehearse at band practice back in the day. Mike had no problem recruiting fans to sing along to "My Own Summer" with him; it was apparent by the strong audience reaction that both LP fans and LP share the same love for the Deftones."
On the bridge of "One Step Closer", the band invited guests and other musicians on the tour out to join them for the rest of the song including B-Real and Sen Dogg from Cypress Hill, Mark Chavez from Adema, DJ Riff Raff and DJ Z-Trip, and more.
Release
The Hybrid Theory 20 release was announced on August 13, 2020 for a release date of October 9, 2020.
The release of Hybrid Theory (20th Anniversary Edition) is composed of the original Hybrid Theory studio album, the Reanimation remix album, the Hybrid Theory EP, a compilation of b-sides from singles released in 2000-2002 titled B-Side Rarities, a compilation of LPU tracks dating from 1997-2002 titled LPU Rarities, a demo CD featuring previously unreleased demos, a replica of the Linkin Park Sampler Street Team cassette tape, a replica of the Frat Party At The Pankake Festival DVD, a second DVD with Linkin Park's full performances at The Fillmore and Rock Am Ring from 2001 and a third DVD featuring live and behind the scenes footage from the Projekt Revolution Tour 2002. The collection sums up to a total of 80 tracks.
The additional content on this DVD is titled "The Sequel To The DVD With The Worst Name We've Ever Come Up With", a sequel to "Frat Party At The Pankake Festival." That DVD features interviews and behind the scenes content from the Projekt Revolution 2002. It was directed and edited by Mark Fiore.
The reception of the news by Linkin Park fans was overwhelmingly positive, as fans had long wanted a release of the tour due to its unique songs in the setlist and the strong performances by Linkin Park in 2002 as fans had grown to learn about from audience audio recordings. It was one of the only large Linkin Park tours where no video footage ever surfaced at all, so a Projekt Revolution 2002 DVD was warmly welcomed.
On October 9, 2020, Linkin Park world premiered the DVD online with a full band Q&A for fans. The announcement read, "Q&A WITH LINKIN PARK + PROJEKT REVOLUTION 2002. As we continue the celebration of #HybridTheory20, join Brad, Dave, Joe, Mike & Rob for a special Q&A hosted by Allison Hagendorf + a premiere of the never before seen Linkin Park performance from Projekt Revolution 2002. Grab your tickets & exclusive bundles at https://watch.linkinpark.com for the world premiere on October 9th @ 9am PDT and a second showing @ 9pm PDT." Linkin Park sold exclusive merch for the event - a HT:20 limited edition event T-shirt for Projekt Revolution 2002, a limited edition HT:20 slip mat and a limited edition HT:20 guitar pick set. A portion of the proceeds from the event benefited the Crew Nation relief fund as well as NIVA (the National Independent Venue Association).
In 2002 and 2003, a few clips of the shows filmed for the DVD were released by Linkin Park on various platforms, but only for a few seconds each. On The Making Of Meteora DVD when Chester and Don Gilmore are talking about Chester pushing himself vocally as an artist, a clip of him singing from Las Vegas 2002 is shown. Additionally, the LP Underground 2.0 trailer[2] on lpunderground.com showed a clip of "With You" from the concert with different camera angles than what ended up being released. Both of these clips preceded the release of the DVD by almost two decades.
