Wake Me tracklist | |
"Shouting Out" is the twelfth and final track on the album Wake Me. The song features additional vocals by Kimberly Rogers.
Background
The first known studio version of "Shouting Out" was recorded sometime in June 1994 as part of a 6-track demo done at Teething Studios, Scott Crowley’s apartment studio. He was from a band called “Nihil”. Jonathan Krause said, "He had a digital recording studio. I thought the drums sounded cheesy they were way to electronic. But it was free so who's complaining?" Sean Dowdell adds, "It wasn't a studio. It was his apartment and he and I recorded it on a very small recording program on a computer. Home recording though, not studio." The song featured additional vocals by Mindy Nilson of Lemon Krayola.[1]
On October 6, 1994, the very first day of working on Wake Me, the album's producer David Knauer recorded Grey Daze playing live in his studio to see what they had in store for their debut album. He recorded their performance straight to DAT tape and had Chester say the name of every song so it was documented on tape as well.[2] While this performance featured only Chester singing "Shouting Out", the album version featured additional vocals by Kimberly Rogers. Sean Dowdell says she was "a friend of mine from a long time ago."[3]
Amends Version (2020)
Grey Daze included "Shouting Out" on their 2020 album Amends, with re-recorded instrumentals and using older takes of Chester's vocals. The song features guest Laura "LP" Pergolizzi. It was produced by Cass Dillon.
In the Amends track-by-track with Apple Music, Sean said, "The guest vocalist on this is Laura 'LP' Pergolizzi. I remember taking a drive with Chester - he was the worst driver on the planet - and he wanted to play me this new song he had just heard from this girl named LP. This would've been 2016, and the song was called 'Lost on You'. He was so animated and jumping all over the car about how great her voice was. We knew we wanted a female vocalist on this track, so we reached out to her and she said yes right away. She does an amazing job. To me, the lyrics kind of sum up the idea that Chester never felt he was deserving of other people's love. It breaks my heart, because so many people thought he was incredible, but he didn't feel that way about himself. In my opinion, that's the best way to sum up the tragedy of what happened: He just never loved himself."[4]
Amends... Stripped Version (2021)
A stripped-down, full-band acoustic version of "Shouting Out" was released on the Amends... Stripped EP in January 2021.
In the Amends... Stripped track-by-track with Revolver, Sean said, "We had two different vocal performances from Chester on the original [1994] Wake Me album, one which was faster and more rock and another that was slower and lent itself to an acoustic version of this song. We scaled everything back and tried to emphasize Chester's vocals in a different light. This is [guitarist] Cristin [Davis'] favorite track on Stripped. This track feels like an apology from Chester and is very emotional for all of us."[5]

Lyrics
Silent criminals analyzed
Through psychic waving tears
Superstitious minds collide
As silence fills the hall
Silence moving proclamations
This silence proving lies, (Oh, woah, oh)
Speechless cries, emotions dull (Oh, woah, oh)
Shouting out across the hall
I didn't mean to let you down
I'm shouting out so ashamed
I didn't mean to run from you
I didn't mean to
Shouting out
(I'm shouting out...)
Showing weakness in your eyes
You're crawling on your knees
Roaming aimless through skies lost
As silence shakes the halls
Creeping past all illusions
Searching thoughts that hide (Oh, woah, oh)
Silence brakes in weeping hands (Oh, woah, oh)
Shouting out and in again
Didn't mean to run from you
I'm shouting out, so ashamed
I didn't mean to let you down
I didn't mean to
Shouting out
Shouting out

Hey, yeah, hey, yeah
Ooh, yeah

Through psychic waving tears (Ooh, yeah)

As silence fills the hall
Silence moving proclamations (Ooh, yeah)
This silence proving lies,
Speechless cries, emotions dull
Shouting out across the hall
Didn't mean to run from you (Yeah)
