Background

"Rolling in the Deep" is a song recorded by British recording artist Adele for her second studio album, 21. The song was written by Adele and Paul Epworth. The singer herself describes it as a "dark blues-y gospel disco tune".

The song was reportedly inspired by a Nashville-schooled US tour bus driver, and composed by Epworth and Adele in a single afternoon following Adele's breakup with her boyfriend. It was "her reaction to, 'being told that my life was going to be boring and lonely and rubbish, and that I was a weak person if I didn't stay in the relationship. I was very insulted, and wrote that as a sort of "fuck you".'"

The song was performed twice by Linkin Park, once as an acoustic version by Mike and Chester along with some help from Brad and Rob on a shaker at the 2011 LPU Summit in Germany, and once at the 2011 iTunes Festival, where Linkin Park performed an acoustic version of the song as part of their set, with Chester Bennington as the lead vocalist and Mike Shinoda on the piano. A recording of this last performance was released to the iTunes Store as a single, debuting at number 42 on the UK Singles Chart. The track was later released as part of the band's iTunes Festival: London 2011 EP.

Other artists who covered the song include OneRepublic, Panic! At the Disco, Aretha Franklin, John Legend, Mike Posner, Nicole Scherzinger, David Cook, Ariana Grande, Haley Reinhart, The Overtones, Lil Wayne, Kassidy, Black Stone Cherry, Celine Dion, Patti Smith, PS22 Chorus, Quentin Elias, Go Radio, Misha B, Vazquez Sounds, Connie Talbot, Amyst, Auryn, Gille, Straight No Chaser, Nathan Sykes, and Lea Michele and Jonathan Groff of Glee.

Live

"Rolling In The Deep" is an obvious staple for Adele's live performances, but it's a rare appearance in Linkin Park's live show. It has only been performed twice by the band, and those two performances were completely different. The first performance occurred at the acoustic set at the Hamburg, Germany LPU Summit in 2011. This acoustic version featuring Mike and Chester only was performed in place of a soundcheck of "QWERTY", as the band were opting for something else out of the ordinary. The other version, a piano version also featuring just Mike and Chester, was performed at the end of the same tour by the request of iTunes at the iTunes Festival in London, England. It replaced "Blackout" in the setlist. This performance was released as a standalone single and was never performed again.

Lyrics

Live Version

There's a fire starting in my heart
Reaching a fever pitch, it's bringing me out the dark
Finally I can see you crystal clear
Go 'head and sell me out and I'll lay your shit bare
See how I leave with every piece of you
Don't underestimate the things that I will do

There's a fire starting in my heart
Reaching a fever pitch
And it's bringing me out the dark

The scars of your love remind me of us
They keep me thinking that we almost had it all
The scars of your love, they leave me breathless
I can't help feeling

We could have had it all
Rolling in the deep
You had my heart inside of your hand
And you played it, to the beat

Baby, I have no story to be told
But I've heard one on you
And I'm gonna make your head burn
Think of me in the depths of your despair
Make a home down there
As mine sure won't be shared

The scars of your love remind me of us
They keep me thinking that we almost had it all
The scars of your love, they leave me breathless
I can't help feeling

We could have had it all
Rolling in the deep
You had my heart inside of your hand
And you played it, to the beat
We could have had it all
Rolling in the deep
You had my heart inside of your hand
But you played it, with a beating

Throw your soul through every open door
Count your blessings to find what you look for
Turn my sorrow into treasured gold
Pay me back in kind and reap just what you sow
We could have had it all
We could have had it all
It all, it all, it all

We could have had it all
Rolling in the deep
You had my heart inside of your hand
And you played it to the beat

We could have had it all
Rolling in the deep
You had my heart inside of your hand

But you played it
You played it
You played it
You played it to the beat.
