"In Between" is the tenth track off of Linkin Park's third studio album, Minutes To Midnight. The song marks the first time Mike Shinoda sang lead vocals for an entire song on an official studio album.

Background

The April 2007 issue of a French magazine published a track by track of Minutes To Midnight on which Chester said, "Mike composed part of this song for violin and cello at the very beginning of the album writing process. I knew for sure that I would do a great job with the vocals, but we all decided that it was Mike who would sing. At the very end, however, my vocals still slip. Rick wanted us to use the Lennon and McCartney approach. They checked the song for a long time, so that it does not sound too pop, you can hear the final result on the album."[2]

The limited edition booklet for Minutes To Midnight had track-by-track commentary on every song on the album. Regarding "In Between", it said "Rick encouraged the band to lay rough vocals on their demos as early as possible, believing that sometimes a sparse song can become great with the right vocal melody. “In Between” was a perfect example. The band connected with it immediately from the first demo. Even with just Mike’s vocal and a bass line, this song remained on the band’s “favorites” list, as many songs with a lot more production were voted off of the album. During the process, the band tried many different versions of this song, adding sampled drums, live drums, and other instruments, but finally returned to the simplest form, the form closest to the “seed.” At one point, Chester sang the song, but ended up voting for Mike’s vocal over his own." Chester Bennington reaffirmed this in an interview with Kerrang!, where he stated "I knew that Mike should really sing this song. I tried it once, I did a good job, but it just didn’t have the power of Mike’s performance because he really believed what he was singing. Whatever it is that the [expletive] is apologising for on this track, he’s [expletive] serious! It comes from the most sincere and heartfelt place."[3][4]

According to Mike, "In Between was an apology song, you know. Listen to the lyrics. Let me look at them really quickly, I want to see if there is anything specific that I can point out to you. I love reading interpretations of the lyrics. I think it's really just an apology song. You know when you just do stuff you shouldn't have done. I think the "pride and promise and lies and truth gets in the way", those parts are the core of the song. I also feel like songs like that are not just about one thing. They are open to interpretation for you guys enough, that I wouldn't want to ruin some peoples' relationships with the song by getting too specific. Other song like on One More Light, there are songs that are about VERY specific things and we've talked about those."[5]

Lyrics

Album Version

Let me apologize to begin with
Let me apologize for what I'm about to say
But trying to be genuine
Was harder than it seemed
And somehow I got caught up in between

Let me apologize to begin with
Let me apologize for what I'm about to say
But trying to be someone else
Was harder than it seemed
And somehow I got caught up in between

Between my pride and my promise
Between my lies and how the truth gets in the way
The things I want to say to you
Get lost before they come
The only thing that's worse than one is none

Let me apologize to begin with
Let me apologize for what I'm about to say
But trying to regain your trust
Was harder than it seemed
And somehow I got caught up in between

Between my pride and my promise
Between my lies and how the truth gets in the way
The things I want to say to you
Get lost before they come
The only thing that's worse than one is none
The only thing that's worse than one is none

And I cannot explain to you
In anything I say or do or plan
Fear is not afraid of you
But guilt's a language you can understand
I cannot explain to you
In anything I say or do
But hope the actions speak the words they can

For my pride and my promise
For my lies and how the truth gets in the way
The things I want to say to you
Get lost before they come
The only thing that's worse than one is

Pride and my promise
Between my lies and how the truth gets in the way
The things I want to say to you
Get lost before they come
The only thing that's worse than one is none
The only thing that's worse than one is none
The only thing that's worse than one is none
