Projekt Revolution 2002 is a live DVD release by Linkin Park in October 2020, included in the Hybrid Theory (20th Anniversary Edition).

Background

After an exhausting almost two years touring for Hybrid Theory, Linkin Park wrapped up their touring cycle for the album with a nineteen show headlining tour in the United States, followed by a one-off show in Mexico and a benefit club show in Hollywood, CA. Projekt Revolution 2002, the band's first arena headlining tour in the U.S., featured friends of the band Cypress Hill, Adema, and DJ Z-Trip.

Composition

Filming for the Projekt Revolution 2002 DVD took place over the last two shows of the Projekt Revolution Tour - in San Diego, California on February 23rd, and the following day February 24th in Las Vegas, Nevada. Most of the audio of the show appears to be from Las Vegas while the video appears to be spliced between the two shows. The DVD was directed, edited, and produced by Bill Berg-Hillinger, who is Anna Shinoda's dad. Bill also did the trailer for the Hybrid Theory 20 release, which was widely praised by the Linkin Park fanbase. Interestingly, Bill also shot one of the cameras on the DVD back in 2002 as well. The audio mix was done by Ethan Mates, who is a longtime collaborator with Linkin Park and has mixed a lot of live LP releases.

Almost all of the band's talking to the crowd and between song breaks were cut entirely from the DVD for an unknown reason.

Linkin Park's setlist for Projekt Revolution 2002 was very similar to what they had performed in 2001 while touring for the album. The familiar opening run of "With You", "Runaway", and "Papercut" remained in place, something the band would return to using in 2004 on their arena tour as well.

There were several unique songs in this setlist. "Step Up" from the Hybrid Theory EP was in the fifth spot of the set, having been debuted the previous fall. Following a delayed start to their European Headline Tour due to the September 11th terrorist attacks, the band was able to perform on September 12th in Berlin, Germany where "Step Up" debuted in the encore of the show. It stuck around in the shows for the last five tours for Hybrid Theory - the European Headline Tour, Family Values Tour, Countdown to Revolution, U.S. Holiday Radio Shows, and Projekt Revolution 2002. "Step Up" was played with a lot of back-and-forth interaction between the band and the crowd as they extended the bridge to get the crowd to raise their hands in the air. The ending was also extended for Joe to scratch on.

Another unique track in the show, "It's Goin' Down, Mike's song he wrote for The X-Ecutioners in 2001, was debuted on this tour in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania on February 7, 2002 after being soundchecked for the first seven shows of the run. At its debut, it was played with DJ Z-Trip, but the first show of the filming in San Diego, CA for the DVD had The X-Ecutioners on stage for the song - the only known time that they joined Linkin Park live for it. The DVD portion of the show only has the Las Vegas, NV footage, which has DJ Z-Trip and Riff Raff stage.

In the encore, Linkin Park performed "My December" with Phoenix on cello, which was only done near the end of 2001 after the Family Values Tour and on this tour for Projekt Revolution. Joe Hahn had a solo that carried over from 2001 as well. On "By Myself" in the encore, Chester sang the song on DJ Z-Trip's platform at the back of the arena floor, in the face of the crowd at the back of the arena.

Perhaps the biggest notable moment of the 2002 show was Linkin Park's cover of "My Own Summer" by the Deftones, a band they grew up big fans of. The first LPU Newsletter mentions the cover, "In addition, LP covered "My Own Summer" by the Deftones, a song LP proudly announced they used to rehearse at band practice back in the day. Mike had no problem recruiting fans to sing along to "My Own Summer" with him; it was apparent by the strong audience reaction that both LP fans and LP share the same love for the Deftones."

Release

The Hybrid Theory 20 release was announced on August 13, 2020 for a release date of October 9, 2020.

The release of Hybrid Theory (20th Anniversary Edition) is composed of the original Hybrid Theory studio album, the Reanimation remix album, the Hybrid Theory EP, a compilation of b-sides from singles released in 2000-2002 titled B-Side Rarities, a compilation of LPU tracks dating from 1997-2002 titled LPU Rarities, a demo CD featuring previously unreleased demos, a replica of the Linkin Park Sampler Street Team cassette tape, a replica of the Frat Party At The Pankake Festival DVD, a second DVD with Linkin Park's full performances at The Fillmore and Rock Am Ring from 2001 and a third DVD featuring live and behind the scenes footage from the Projekt Revolution Tour 2002. The collection sums up to a total of 80 tracks.

The reception of the news by Linkin Park fans was overwhelmingly positive, as fans had long wanted a release of the tour due to its unique songs in the setlist and the strong performances by Linkin Park in 2002 as fans had grown to learn about from audience audio recordings. It was one of the only large Linkin Park tours where no video footage ever surfaced at all, so a Projekt Revolution 2002 was warmly welcomed.
