Background

"Guilty All The Same" caused some internal controversy with it being the lead single. Mike Shinoda revealed that the label was pushing the band to release a song like "Until It's Gone" or "Final Masquerade" as the lead single, but the band was adamant that it had to be "Guilty All The Same" to get their message across.[1] Chester Bennington later revealed that the band had started out writing softer, poppier songs before Shinoda decided he wanted to change gears, and brought in what would eventually become "Guilty All The Same", and Shinoda later revealed that "Guilty All The Same" was one of the songs that helped define the direction The Hunting Party would go in.[2][3] "Guilty All The Same" was also the first song on The Hunting Party that Rob Bourdon recorded drums for, and had to work up to it for a month.[4]

While writing the song, Shinoda knew he wanted a rap verse in the song, but felt it would be too predictable for him to do it. He jokingly asked if they could get Rakim, one of Shinoda's idols, in to do the verse, and the engineer told Shinoda that he could get in contact with Rakim. Within a week, Shinoda was on the phone with Rakim, and got him to do the verse during the bridge.[5] Rakim drove out to LA, and was working on and perfecting his verse the entire time. He was still working on it in the studio before he went in to record it.[6] Shinoda went on to cite the verse as an example of why Rakim is one of his favorite rappers, and that it is the "perfect mix of technicality, content, and emotional expression".[7][8]

The song was also pitched to Daron Malakian, who featured on "Rebellion", but he felt he had nothing to add to "Guilty All The Same".[9]

Remix

On December 24, 2014, several members from the Linkin Park Association community teamed up to release a remix album of The Hunting Party titled Viscera. The album was later released to the LP Underground on June 18, 2015 after the band received the full rights to distribute the album. There were two remixes of "Guilty All The Same" released on the album. One, titled "Smokescreen", was done by minuteforce and Shurpi and remixes only Rakim's verse and the chorus on the song. The second, done by MKH, includes a verse from "Breaking The Habit". The instrumental version of the remixes were released on February 28, 2015.

Live

"Guilty All The Same" got its live debut at the first show of The Hunting Party touring cycle at KFMA Day 2014. For the first several shows it was played at, it suffered from technical difficulties including Brad and Mike's guitars turning off, and very noticeable auto tune on Chester's voice. At every show it was played at except one, it opened the show with either "Mashup Intro #1" during the European summer tour or "Mashup Intro #2" for Carnivores and beyond. At the band's surprise show at Warped Tour, Mike Hranica & Jeremy DePoyster from The Devils Wears Prada came out on the second verse to perform the song with the band, and is the only time this song has had guests on it. Starting at Rock In Rio USA, "Guilty All The Same" was dropped from the set, presumably to make room for "A Line In The Sand". In a LPU Chat, Mike confirmed that "Guilty All The Same" was dropped due to Rob having shoulder problems and Brad hurting his wrist, both while playing it.[10]

Tell us all again
What you think we should be
What the answers are
What it is we can't see
Tell us all again
How to do what you say
How to fall in line
How there's no other way
But oh / We all know

You're guilty all the same
Too sick to be ashamed
You want to point your finger
But there's no one else to blame
You're guilty all the same
Too sick to be ashamed
You want to point your finger
But there's no one else to blame
You're guilty all the same

Show us all again
That our hands are unclean
That we're unprepared
That you have what we need
Show us all again
'Cause we cannot be saved
'Cause the end is near
Now there's no other way
Yeah oh / You will know

You're guilty all the same
Too sick to be ashamed
You want to point your finger
But there's no one else to blame
You're guilty all the same
Too sick to be ashamed
You want to point your finger
But there's no one else to blame
There's no one else to blame
Guilty all the same
Guilty all the same
You're guilty all the same

Yeah
You already know what it is
Can y'all explain
What kind of land is this
When a man has plans of being rich
But the bosses' plans are wealthy?
Dirty money scheme
A clean split is nonsense
It's insane
Even corporate hands is filthy
They talk team and take the paper route
All they think about is bank accounts, assets and realty
At anybody's expense
No shame with a clear conscience
No regrets and guilt free
They claim that ain't the way that they built me
The smokescreen before the flame
Knowin' as soon as the dough or the deal peak
They say it's time for things to change
Rearrange like good product rebuilt cheap
Anything if it's more to gain
Drained, manipulated like artists, it's real deep
Until no more remains
But I'm still me
Like authentic hip-hop and rock
Til' pop and radio and record companies killed me
Try to force me to stray and obey
And got the gall to say you know how real can real be
You feel me, we'll see
That green could be to blame
Or greedy for the fame
TV or a name
The media, the game
To me you're all the same
You're guilty [x7]

You're guilty all the same
Too sick to be ashamed
You want to point your finger
But there's no one else to blame
You're guilty all the same
Too sick to be ashamed
You want to point your finger
But there's no one else to blame
There's no one else to blame
Guilty all the same
Guilty all the same
Guilty all the same
