Background
"The Summoning" is a short sonic experiment that the band added late into the process while recording The Hunting Party. It's meant to give the listener a break before the next track, "War".[1]
When asked in June 2020 if the song sampled older Linkin Park material, Mike said, "I don't think there are snippets of old Linkin Park things in it, we just made things that sounded very LP. You know what's fun about that song and about that album? If you really listen to it, there's elements of it that sound like... it's almost like taking like A Thousand Suns sounds and adding metal. I loved that after the fact, it was like a little dirtier with the samples and stuff. The non-guitar based drums, it was darker and dirtier. Darker meaning EQ, it wasn't as bright."[2]
Remix
On December 24, 2014, several members from the Linkin Park Association community teamed up to release a remix album of The Hunting Party titled Viscera. The album was later released to the LP Underground on June 18, 2015 after the band received the full rights to distribute the album. The remix of "The Summoning" was done by minuteforce. The instrumental version of the remix was released February 28, 2015.

Live
"The Summoning" has never been played in full, but parts of it were incorporated into "Mashup Intro #2", which debuted at the private production rehearsal in West Palm Beach. Starting with Rock In Rio USA, "Mashup Intro #2" was dropped, and the only bit of "The Summoning" that was played live was dropped with it.
