"Mark The Graves" is the ninth track on Linkin Park's sixth studio album, The Hunting Party. The song ends with a short musical interlude that transitions directly into the next song, "Drawbar".

Background

"Mark The Graves" was one of the earliest demos for The Hunting Party, along with "Guilty All The Same". Mike Shinoda also initially wanted the track to open the album, but was not chosen for the role.[2] Brad Delson had Mike loop the track so he could do a solo over it just for fun and it was then the album really started to grow into what it is. All of the drums on the song were also tracked to tape, rather than digitally, like the band usually does.[3] Rob Bourdon also played on a more unique drum set, with tambourines duct taped upright on the snares.[4] Commenting on the song, Mike said that "Chester & I usually do all the lyrics on the albums, but Brad helped too on #TheHuntingParty."[5]

Brad called the song a favorite in the studio,[6] mentioning it as his favorite song from The Hunting Party as well.[7]

During a stream on May 11, 2020, Mike also talked about "Mark The Graves" being one of his favorite tracks of the album, "I listened to "Mark The Graves" the other day because a bunch of Peruvian Linkin Park fans did a playoff bracket of Linkin Park songs and a couple of people were like, man, Mark The Graves wasn't on there! "Keys To The Kingdom" was, "Guilty All The Same" was, and those are two of my favorite tracks off the record for sure. But "Mark The Graves" wasn't and I went back and listened to it, and I was like, 'Ah that was one of my favorite songs on the record. That was a really fun one, that was a cool one.' But that whole record, like "A Line In The Sand", those are some of my favorite ones I think."[8]

Remix

On December 24, 2014, several members from the Linkin Park Association community teamed up to release a remix album of The Hunting Party titled Viscera. The album was later released to the LP Underground on June 18, 2015 after the band received the full rights to distribute the album. The remix of "Mark The Graves", which was used to close the album, was done by Xefuzion. The instrumental version of the remix was released February 28, 2015.

Lyrics

Album Version

One, two
One, two, three, four

There's a fragile game we play
With the ghosts of yesterday
If we can't let go we'll never say goodbye
No trace of what remains
No stones to mark the graves
Only memories we thought we could deny

There was so much more to lose
Than the pain I put you through
In my carelessness I left you in the dark
And the blood may wash away
But the scars will never fade
At least I know somehow I made a mark

In the dark
In the light
Nothing left
Nothing right
In the dark
In the light
Nothing left
Nothing RIGHT

The dark
The light
Nothing left
Nothing right

In the dark
In the light
Nothing left
Nothing RIGHT
NOTHING RIGHT
NOTHING RIGHT
AHH
