Template:Infobox single "Leave Out All The Rest" is the third song on Linkin Park's third studio album, Minutes To Midnight. The track was released as the fifth and final single from the album on July 14, 2008. The song also appeared on the Twilight soundtrack, and during the end credits of the movie.
Background
The booklet for the limited edition version of Minutes To Midnight revealed that the song remained largely unchanged throughout the album sessions, stating "The final version of this track is virtually the same as the first demo of the song. Very little changed between the first incarnation of the music, and the final version that appears on the album. The lyrics, however, were one place where the most work took place. The chorus of this song, working-titled “Fear,” went through over 30 lyric variations before arriving at this version."
Chester Bennington, in an issue of Kerrang!, talked about some of the meaning behind "Leave Out All The Rest", saying "We knew this was going to be a single from the very beginning, so we worked really hard on making sure it had some great lyrics. I'm singing 'Pretending someone else can save me from myself' during it because it's supposed to feel like an apology letter, as though I'm moving on but I want people to remember the good things and not the bad things. A lot of the song is about humility."[1] Mike Shinoda mentioned how he had grown attached to the song throughout the writing sessions for Minutes To Midnight, and Rick Rubin mentioned how he, like Bennington, knew that it would become a single.[2]
A demo version of the song, called "Fear", would later be released on the LP Underground 9.0: Demos CD. About this version, Mike said, "The evolution from "fear" to LOATR was a pretty standard evolution, for us. Most of our songs start as one thing, then change as we work on them, until they sound right. Not that Fear is bad, it's just undercooked (to me). But there's a beauty in that undercooked-ness that we wanted you guys to hear. Nobody ever gets to hear it but us, usually usually."[3]
Remix
On the Japanese version of the "Leave Out All The Rest" single, a remix done by Mike Shinoda is included. Parts of this remix were used as the introduction to LPTV episodes in 2009.
The intro to the song was redone in an 8-bit style and released as a ringtone in support of 8-Bit Rebellion!.

Live
"Leave Out All The Rest" was a key part of setlists in the Minutes To Midnight era. During live performances, Phoenix contributed electric guitar instead of bass, a first for him. Mike said he does it to cover the low end sound on the song live, so it doesn't require live bass. The song debuted on the Minutes To Midnight European Tour, where it was sandwiched between "From The Inside" and "Numb" in the middle of the set. When the band introduced rotating sets, "Leave Out All The Rest" was only featured in Set C. At the second night in Melbourne, Australia, Chester broke his wrist during the beginning of "Papercut", so after the band performed "Leave Out All The Rest", Chester went to get it check out backstage. While he did so, the band performed a short instrumental jam after the song. The song experienced the same generosity in 2008, with it only being part of Set R of the three new sets on the first Minutes To Midnight European Tour. The song finally got more attention on the second Minutes To Midnight European Tour of 2008, where it was featured in all three setlists: it's typical position in Set X, mid-set after "Points Of Authority" in Set Y, and late-set after "Crawling" in Set Z. The song retained these positions for the rest of the year.
The song was initially not part of the setlists at the beginning of the A Thousand Suns touring cycle. After reading a thread on LPLive about the lack of changing setlists on the tour, the band added "Lying From You" and "Leave Out All The Rest" into the setlists unrehearsed, replacing "Papercut" and "The Messenger" respectively. This first began mid-tour in Köln, Germany, and alternated every other show. This was the first time that the song had been featured in the encore. The song made it into Set B on the A Thousand Suns Australian Tour, where it segued out of the extended outro of "Numb", but was replaced by "Burning In The Skies" at the second performance of Set B. "Leave Out All The Rest" was performed only once in 2011, at the show in Detroit, Michigan on the A Thousand Suns North American Tour.
The song returned in 2012, on the Living Things touring cycle, but in a new light. It was the first part of the newly introduced "LOATR/SOTD/Iridescent" medley, which was performed in the same spot in the setlists (after "Breaking The Habit") throughout the entire touring cycle. At the 7th LPU Summit in Cape Town, South Africa, a potential rehearsal setlist was found, which featured the studio version of "Leave Out All The Rest", however, the song was not played in that form. At the band's Concert For The Philipinnes event in early 2014, The Filharmonic from the show "Sing Off" joined the band for the "Iridescent" portion of the medley. A different medley was performed in March 2014, at the band's honoring at the UCLA Evening of Environmental Excellence - instead of featuring "Iridescent" at the end, the band took the Ballad Medley and replaced that portion of the song with "What I've Done".
The Ballad Medley remained as part of the setlists on The Hunting Party touring cycle, always being played after the Experience Version of "Castle Of Glass". On The Hunting Party European Tour at the end of the year, as well as the shortlived The Hunting Party North American Tour in 2015, Aaron Pauley from Of Mice & Men began joining the band for the "Iridescent" portion of the Ballad Medley near the end of the European Tour, beginning in Manchester, England.

Lyrics
I dreamed I was missing
You were so scared
But no one would listen
Cause no one else cared
After my dreaming
I woke with this fear
What am I leaving
When I'm done here
So if you're asking me I want you to know
When my time comes
Forget the wrong that I've done
Help me leave behind some
Reasons to be missed
And don't resent me
And when you're feeling empty
Keep me in your memory
Leave out all the rest
Leave out all the rest
Don't be afraid
I've taken my beating
I've shared what I made
I'm strong on the surface
Not all the way through
I've never been perfect
But neither have you
So if you're asking me I want you to know
When my time comes
Forget the wrong that I've done
Help me leave behind some
Reasons to be missed
And don't resent me
And when you're feeling empty
Keep me in your memory
Leave out all the rest
Leave out all the rest
Forgetting / All the hurt inside you've learned to hide so well
Pretending / Someone else can come and save me from myself
I can't be who you are
When my time comes
Forget the wrong that I've done
Help me leave behind some
Reasons to be missed
And don't resent me
And when you're feeling empty
Keep me in your memory
Leave out all the rest
Leave out all the rest
Forgetting / All the hurt inside you've learned to hide so well
Pretending / Someone else can come and save me from myself
I can't be who you are
I can't be who you are

Looked in the ocean
Looked in the sea
Found her often
Watching for me
Left the door open
Left the door wide
As she often
Kept it inside
And if you're badder than fact phone z
Phend it back to me
Sitting front pitter badder than b
Even badder than phint to phone badder
Than the patter in friends
Who gutter the prat
The friday on the patter you plumped
You're getting thrown even badder than bomb
Don't trust
And if you don't then you're fighting for what
We're fighting for a place
We can call home
Looking for a way
Not to be alone
Fighting for a place

Looking for a way
