"Wake Me" is the fourth and title track on Grey Daze's 1994 debut studio album Wake Me.

Background

On October 6, 1994, the very first day of working on Wake Me, the album's producer David Knauer recorded Grey Daze playing live in his studio to see what they had in store for their debut album. He recorded their performance straight to DAT tape and had Chester say the name of every song so it was documented on tape as well.[1] "Wake Me" was among the songs that made the album. According to Jonathan Krause, the song was taken from Chester and Sean's old band, Sean Dowdell And His Friends?.[2]

On February 18, 1996, David Knauer brought them into his studio again and recorded the band playing live in preparation for their first album under Real Records. Knauer was eventually released from his contract and the band started working on the record with the label's producer and engineer, Andy Barrett and Glen Parrish. The album never came out and later that year Knauer was asked to redo it. This time, instead of working at his studio, they went to the Conservatory of Recording Arts & Sciences in Phoenix. The band was recorded live by David Knauer and Mike Jones during their pre-production session for ...No Sun Today on December 3rd. That same month, Knauer was in a bad car accident so he had to move way from the project. The album was finished with Jones as producer.[3] "Wake Me" was in consideration for both albums, but didn't make the final tracklist.

Lyrics

Album Version

Should I have a taste of this
Run across your lips
And start all over again

Could this all just be a dream?

If I should fall to stormy weather
Wake me, wake me
(Yeah!)

Maybe this time I can do it all right
Without my foot in my mouth
Without that blind in my sight

Could this all just be a dream?

If I should fall to stormy weather
Wake me, wake me
(Yeah!)

If I should fall to stormy weather
Wake me, wake me
Me, yeah, hey

GO!

Ohh...
Ohh...

Too scared to lose the one
I tried so hard for
Too scared to lose the one
I never had
Too scared to lose the one
I tried so hard for
Too scared to lose the one
I never had

Yeah...
