"Hole" is the eighth track on the albums Wake Me and ...No Sun Today.

Background

Jonathan Krause came up with the musical idea for "Hole", describing it as a "mostly bass driven song".[1]

On October 6, 1994, the very first day of working on Wake Me, the album's producer David Knauer recorded Grey Daze playing live in his studio to see what they had in store for their debut album. He recorded their performance straight to DAT tape and had Chester say the name of every song so it was documented on tape as well.[2] "Hole" was among the songs that made the album.

Under a new lineup consisting of Chester Bennington, Bobby Benish, Mace Beyers and Sean Dowdell, the band had their first pre-production sessions for their second studio album in February 1996 with David Knauer. There, they recorded a new version of "Hole". The album version, however, was recorded by Michael Jones during their pre-production session for ...No Sun Today in December.[1]

In 2018, Grey Daze recorded a new version of "Hole" for the Amends album project, but it didn't make the cut. This version of the song was streamed by the band on Instagram in July 2018.[3]

Lyrics

Wake Me Version

I would have sailed away
If I'd known that nothing would change
staring out my window sill
In my wasted prison cell

And I know what you want
And I know what you fear
As I cradle your loving
And watch you disappear

And I feel your heartbeat
Pounding in my head
I like to control you
Cause I can't control myself
Myself

Rain,
Come my way
Mold my head
Like a ball of clay
Softly wither into my grave
Never to see, the sun again

And I feel your heartbeat
Pounding in my head
I like to control you
Cause I can't control myself
Myself

All alone in a crowd by myself
So sorry, wish I could find a way
Back into your hole again
But I've become your enemy

And I feel your heartbeat
Pounding in my head
I like to control you
Cause I can't control myself
Myself

Hole...
Hole...
Hole...

"Difference is good."

...No Sun Today Version

I would have sailed away, if I'd known that nothing would change
Staring out my window sill, in my wasted prison cell

And I know what you want
And I know what you fear
As I cradle your loving
And watch you disappear

And I feel your heartbeat, pounding in my head
I'd like to control you, 'cause I can't control myself (myself)

Rain come my way, mold my head like a ball of clay,
Softly wither into my grave, never to see the sun again

And I feel your heartbeat, pounding in my head
I'd like to control you, 'cause I can't control myself (myself)

All alone in a crowd by myself, so sorry wish I could
Find a way
Back into your hole again but, I've become your enemy

And I feel your heartbeat, pounding in my head
I'd like to control you, 'cause I can't control myself (myself)

Hole...
Hole...
Hole...

Yeah...
