Background

It's unknown when exactly "White Noise" was started, but the lyrics of the song can be seen during the The Hunting Party album trailer.[1] It may have been written during the sessions for and considered for The Hunting Party.

The band worked on the soundtrack for Joe's film Mall with Alec Puro from 2012 to 2013. Mike Shinoda started to mix the soundtrack for a release in October 2014[2] while Linkin Park was touring in Brazil, and "White Noise" was released for free download on October 17, 2014 on Linkin Park's official website.[3]

Talking about the soundtrack, Joe Hahn said, "Yeah, there’s an original score. You can actually get a taste of it; we put out a clip of the opening credits that has a song called “White Noise,” that’s in the beginning. It’s pretty cool, it helps define that thrashy-ness of one of the characters in the film who is the catalyst of the negative things that go on. We also have a couple of other songs that speak directly to certain characters. Especially these characters that Jeff [main character] connects with on a spiritual level. Because of that we’re able to also use those songs as thematic songs during the film, to present different melodies to remind you audibly of who these people are."[4] He further elaborated, "There's three songs on the score that fit really well with what's going on and actually brought those particular themes to life as it pertains to those characters, and they resonated so much that they became themes throughout the film. So if you notice there's...a little piano that reoccurs that sounds like a kid's piano each time you see him. With different characters there's melodies or sound designs that correspond each time those things happen."[5]

"White Noise" is the only song on the film which didn't have its title changed for the album.

The version of "White Noise" used during the movie is a demo version of the track. It has a longer intro and a a sampled drum buildup before the song. The music used in the buildup was released as part of the track "Danny In Police Car - Mal Gears Up" on the Mall soundtrack.

Album Version

You've been faking it all this time
You left my trust on the firing line
As the promises break
The only mistakes
Giving you what was mine
Your words are clear but their meaning's gone
The notes are right but the tuning's wrong
And when you tell me again that
I should give in
I can only take it so long, long, long, long

AHHH / You're terrified, terrified
You'd rather throw it all away, all away, all
AWAY / You're terrified, terrified
You'd rather throw it all away

Fear is dancing inside your lies
Exposing secrets that you've disguised
And I'm biting my tongue
As you become
Victim of a compromise
'Cause I know who you really are
Not a scratch where you pretend you're scarred
And it's time that you see
The truth about me
I can only get you so far

AHHH / You're terrified, terrified
You'd rather throw it all away, all away, all
AWAY / You're terrified, terrified
You'd rather throw it all away

THROW IT ALL AWAY, ALL AWAY, WAY
THROW IT ALL AWAY, ALL AWAY, ALL AWAY, WAY
THROW IT ALL AWAY, ALL AWAY, ALL AWAY, WAY
THROW IT ALL AWAY, ALL AWAY, ALL AWAY, WAY
THROW IT ALL AWAY, ALL A-

AHHH / You're terrified, terrified
You'd rather throw it all away, all away, all
AWAY / You're terrified, terrified
You'd rather throw it all away, all away, all
AWAY / You're terrified, terrified
You'd rather throw it all away, all away, all
AWAY / You're terrified, terrified
You'd rather throw it all away
