"Dungeon Crawler" is the sixth track on the Dropped Frames, Vol. 2 instrumental release by Mike Shinoda. The track was teased on promotional artwork for Dropped Frames, Vol. 1 on Mike's official store.

Background

"Dungeon Crawler" is a song by Mike Shinoda made during the 2020 global COVID-19 pandemic.

In March 2020, the global pandemic created by the COVID-19 coronavirus caused communities to quarantine at home. During this time, Mike Shinoda decided to start live streaming online and inviting fans to watch him create new instrumental music.

"Dungeon Crawler" was a track made by Mike on May 1, 2020 under the working title "Ganon's Surprise." The Legend of Zelda was the theme, requested by a fan.[1]

Mike said, "Ari got 2,500 ShinodaBucks and selected our theme. She selected Zelda. What I did, I'm not actually just like, you know, playing this off of a Nintendo or something. So I got the MIDI notes, that's the digital notes. What website did I get it from? I got it from... in case you guys ever want to find quick MIDI - bitmidi.com. I grabbed the notes from there so it's actually separated out into like, bass, and a mid range note, and a high note. So call it bass, cello, and violas and violins. It's separated, it's kind of cool, right? So the normal speed of this thing, I have it at 132 right now, the original is up here at 150ish. One thing I had to go check out was the dungeon theme from the same game. Sometimes the MIDI is not exactly what is in the game, because a human rewrote it. So I don't know what tempo this was originally, so let's head down to 130."

He added, "I'm trying to decide today... I don't think I want to sample those guys. I think I want to take that idea and use some things I noticed about these themes and make my own thing, and then make my own track out of it. That way, I actually want to make these things releasable and I don't want to clear a Zelda thing. Here's some things I noticed - it's a three note combination, so three voices going on, I also noticed that it's a triplet, it's like a 6/8 or whatever. That's what I noticed. By the way, the composer also went to a 4/4 at different points. Maybe we can find ways to add some 4/4 over the triplet thing to spice it up. I mean it's a great composition. And by the way, the other thing I noticed is this is starts, the first chord is an A sharp major, he does go to A sharp minor, but for those of us paying attention at home, the relative minor to A sharp major is a G minor and that's what the dungeon theme is in. So it's like, they work together... it's so smart, it's such a great thing. With that said, maybe I can interpolate, I can start from that key/triplet and I don't want to go 150, that's too fast for today. I was already playing around with some sounds, I have some sounds. When I was messing around, I had a little chord progression, I need to re-figure it out because I put all my chord progressions in my phone here."
