"Mixed Signals" is the third track on Chandler's debut EP Brent. The song was produced by Mike Shinoda as a part of his #ShinodaProduceMe initiative. The track was made available on iTunes in early May upon pre-order of the EP prior to its May 7, 2022 release.[1] The cover art is composed of photographies by Sasha Neboga.[2]
Background
Chandler Brent Borrelli is an LA-based singer/songwriter known mononymously as Chandler. He released his first project Brent, the first of 3 solo EPs planned for that year, on May 7, 2022. A self-titled EP (after his middle name), Brent represents the return to an identity that had been shoved aside and artificially altered by the standards of the music industry and all things “Hollywood.” Highlighting beautiful insecurities from skin imperfections to sexuality, Brent liberates any inadequacies and honors true identity, celebrating everything that was once deemed unacceptable.[2]
The third track on the EP, titled "Mixed Signals", was produced by Mike Shinoda live on Twitch on March 8, 2021 as part of his #ShinodaProduceMe initiative. Chandler's original demo consisted of piano and vocal tracks. Mike commented, “He sent [the song] in a format that I’ve seen before. It’s just like parts basically … it’s arranged in the shape of the song, but like, for example, the layers of vocals he put in the first chorus, he didn’t put them in the second chorus or the third chorus … that indicates to me that … I’m supposed to copy paste them into the other ones … so I’m supposed to structure it.” He began by organizing the multitude of vocal tracks and adding a few changes to them, such as auto tune. After playing the piano track, Mike decided he wanted to use different chords and created new ones on his keyboard. He then added more instruments and sounds to the track, including drums, synth, more keys and piano, and guitar harmonies.[3]
Speaking about the experience, Chandler said, "Incredible. He was my idol in a lot of ways as a kid. An incredible writer and producer and performer. An artist. I stumbled upon a post of his where he was advertising a new concept and was going to live produce people’s songs on Twitch. It was a whole hashtag competition thing on social networks to “win” the opportunity. I didn’t want to play, so I just reached out directly. I sent him a couple of songs and pretty much told him I was a huge fan and would be honored to work with him in any capacity. I truly didn’t even expect him to respond. A week went by; and, when he did, I sort of panicked. I called one of my best friend’s back in Alabama who was equally obsessed with Linkin Park growing up, and we were both beyond stoked. Fast forward several months, and I just released “Mixed Signals” that’s already a clear favorite on the EP. So, so, so grateful for the opportunity. Need to meet him in person." As for the meaning of the song, he explained, "“Mixed Signals” is about an ex – we went back and forth a million times and sadly still are playing that game of call it off, talk again, hook up maybe, call it off. It’s exhausting honestly."[4]
