Background

In 2007, hip-hop star and actor Ludacris founded an online music creation community and user-generated record label named WeMix, which was headquartered in New York City. Designed to appeal to both musicians and music fans, the website allowed artists to interact, share their music, give feedback, and collaborate with other artists.

Coinciding with the premiere of Mike Shinoda's Glorious Excess (Born) and Glorious Excess (Dies) art exhibit, WeMix partnered with Mike to launch the "Mike Shinoda: The Glorious (WeMix)" songwriting contest. To enter the contest, artists should go to WeMix's website and submit an original song from any genre inspired by Mikie's artwork from the exhibit. The contest started on July 30, 2008 with an original deadline for song entries on August 18,[1] but it was later extended to September 22.[2]

To help the contestants, some images of Mike's artwork were displayed on the contest page on WeMix. Five finalists were chosen by Mike and then the WeMix community determined the winner.[3]

The winner of the contest was Zii (also known as Zii Dimensional) with the song "Stories Of The Lost". The song was produced by P-Nut and recorded in an improvised studio on the producer's house. Despite the rules stating the song should be inspired by Mike's artwork, "Stories Of The Lost" was actually written beforehand. The song is about good women becoming bad as a result of situations they went through in life. When going through Mike's art, Zii spotted a picture of three women and a skeleton which he associated with his song. Zii and P-Nut were flown into Los Angeles and Mike joined them at the Encore Studios in Burbank, California to record an improved version of "Stories Of The Lost".[4] This new version was released as a digital single on June 11, 2009.[5]
