Background

"Already Over" is a song by Mike Shinoda from fall 2023, not intended for an album.

Mike said, ""Already Over" came to me as I was sitting with my favorite guitar in my hands—the same guitar I used on songs from "What I've Done" to "In My Head." There was a familiar DNA to the song that I think Linkin Park fans will recognize. For me, it creates a bridge from the past to a blurry but exciting future."^[2]

Mike said that he was ready to make more music for himself after a period of writing music for others since the COVID-19 pandemic began and he wrapped down his Post Traumatic era. He said, "For the last few years, I've been writing and producing for other people. I had songs with Demi Lovato, Grandson, Justus Bennetts, and PVRIS. A number of other things. There was a point where I realized, "Okay, I've done things, I've been avoiding getting on the microphone, and really just focusing all this attention on other people's things." He added, "I realized that I missed the artistic reward of going into a project for your own voice – for my voice – and kind of going deep on that. And, you know, the other thing was that I've never really considered myself a singer so much. I mean, I do sing, but it's functional. It's something that I would do to write a song, like sing harmonies or whatever. And I've occasionally sung on Linkin Park stuff."

He wanted to grow as a singer, saying “The process of writing new songs and singing songs on them was like, I realized that I can actually... With each release, I'm trying to learn something new or experiment with something I haven't done. I was like, ‘Oh, I actually have room to grow as a singer. Like, I can get better at this.’ And so it hasn't been academic in any way – it's just been writing more songs for me to sing.”

Describing writing the song, he said, "I remember with this track – I wrote it on a Fender Stratocaster, just sitting down, with it not even plugged in. As I was building it, like, adding layers to it – not super techie or hip-hop, none of those more complicated things felt like they wanted to go into the song."

Release

Mike teased the new single with a series of Tumblr-style images online and debuted a game SURV1VOR on his website. He said, "In the bigger picture, this release takes some of my favorite things about releasing music and assembles them in a different way - with more music, games, challenges, great things to watch, and lots of new art on the way."

The song was released digitally on October 6, 2023, along with an accompanying visualizer on YouTube.

On October 9, 2023, a Spotify-exclusive vinyl of "Already Over" and "In My Head" was announced to followers of Mike, Fort Minor, and Linkin Park on Spotify. Mike's message in the email said, "Hey Everyone, My new song ALREADY OVER is out and to thank you for your support, here's a VERY LIMITED 7-inch vinyl exclusive to top Spotify listeners of my solo music, Fort Minor and LINKIN PARK. Only 1,000 units are available for this offer - until October 16, 2023 at 9:00 AM PDT or while supplies last - so act quickly!"^[3] The email with the link to purchase the vinyl was sent out on a rolling basis until it sold out and was not sent in one batch email to start with on October 9. The vinyl was priced at $14.98. The release date of the vinyl was announced as December 8, 2023, but orders began shipping & arriving ahead of time in late November.

On December 1, 2023, Mike released The Crimson Chapter EP which is an eight song EP centered around "Already Over", remixes/reinterpretations of it, and several other tracks.

Throughout late 2023 and 2024, Mike continued releasing "Already Over" live versions from his visits around the world.
