Background

While most of the songs on Out Of Ashes were written about Chester's relationships and the dark period he went through while working on the album, "End Of The World" stands out for being the only song in the record to feature politically charged lyrics.

Part of the original lyrics to the song, as confirmed by Ryan Shuck,[1] were shown during an interview to The MySpace Music Feed. They were: "Do you believe in life after death, Without any pain or disease, Do you believe that faith is a test, The greatest truth can't be seen, Do you believe those who suffer are blessed, They know the true meaning of life."[2]

Live

"End Of The World" was debuted at the first show of the Out Of Ashes promotional tour, being played after "Too Late", and getting an extended outro with the band repeating the final refrain. At the mtvU Ulalume show, "End Of The World" opened the show for the first, and only, time. When the band embarked on their 2010 Asian tour, "End Of The World" was moved down to after "Into You" in the set, where it stayed for the remainder of its tenure live.

Lyrics

Album Version

When you read the news, does it make you sick?
Murder, money, politics
Gonna fill you up, get your bullshit fix
It's the end of the world
Grab your crucifix and fall to your knees
And beg, "God please, have mercy on me!" (Mercy!)

When you turn on the TV, what do you get?
Sex, lies, scandal, violence
Like the end of a gun pressed against your lips
It's the end of the world
Grab your crucifix and fall to your knees
And beg, "God please, have mercy on me!"

When you can't buy gas and you can't pay rent
And what you've got left is the government's
No win, no future, no benefit
It's the end of the world
Grab your crucifix and fall to your knees
And beg, "God please, have mercy on me!"

Common enemy hypocrisy
Common enemy theocracy
Common enemy the war MACHINE

You can't ignore what you cannot see
You can't believe in a lie
You can't run away from anything
Until you open your eyes

No rest for the wicked, yeah they never quit
Watching, waiting for the next hit
We won't be celebrating when the atom's split
It's the end of the world
Grab your crucifix and fall to your knees
And beg, "God please, have mercy on me!"

Common enemy hypocrisy (Oh)
Common enemy theocracy (Oh, ah)
Common enemy the war MACHINE (Oh, ah)

You can't ignore what you cannot see
You can't believe in a lie
You can't run away from anything
Until you open your eyes

Common enemy hypocrisy
Common enemy theocracy
Common enemy the war MACHINE
