"Commit"
Song by Grey Daze
Recorded:October 06, 1994
Length:3:30
Writer:Chester Bennington

"Commit" was a song created during the sessions that led to the recording of Grey Daze's first studio album, Wake Me. It was considered for inclusion on both of Grey Daze's studio albums but was eventually left out of both.

Background

Vocalist Chester Bennington came up with the original idea for "Commit"[1] and was also responsible for its lyrics. According to him, "This song is a song about love."[2]

On October 6, 1994, the very first day of working on Wake Me, the album's producer David Knauer recorded Grey Daze playing live in his studio to see what they had in store for their debut album. He recorded their performance straight to DAT tape and had Chester say the name of every song so it was documented on tape as well.[3] "Commit" was among the songs that didn't make the album.

Under a new lineup consisting of Chester Bennington, Bobby Benish, Mace Beyers and Sean Dowdell, the band had their first pre-production sessions for their second studio album in February 1996 with David Knauer. There, they recorded a new version of "Commit". The album, however, was shelved due to lack of funds to finish the studio time.[4]

Lyrics

Album Version

I'm wasting my time
I'm wasting my breath
I'm wasting my energy
Trying to impress
What's so wrong with all that I do?
What's so wrong with everything that I do?

So no one's home
When I come on the phone you try to avoid me
When I get you alone
What have I done?
What did I do?
All I wanted was anything from you

I won't mistreat you
All my love is around you
For so long it's always been this way
If I let you come in you can follow me

Kill my depression why I don't kill you?
I'm going insane from all the things that you do
Growing illusions crawl in your head
Growing illusions crawl in your head
You can keep on knocking but you can't come in
I'm going crazy from dreaming of you
What have you done?
What did you do?
All I wanted was something from you

I wanna commit!
I wanna commit!
I wanna commit!
I wanna commit!

COMMIT!
COMMIT!
COMMIT!
COMMIT!
COMMIT!
COMMIT!
COMMIT!
COMMIT!
COMMIT!
