Background

"What We Don't Know" is one of the seventeen songs recorded for Minutes To Midnight in 2006-2007 and is one of the five songs that did not make the album, along with "No Roads Left", "Across The Line", "Blackbirds", and another unknown fifth song. This song was mixed by Neal Avron, who mixed the rest of Minutes To Midnight, meaning that it made it all the way to the very end of the process and was one of the last songs to be voted out of the album's tracklisting.

The song was released on the LP Underground X CD on November 17, 2010. In the LPU newsletter, Brad said the following about "What We Don't Know", "That was the song that we started during the Minutes To Midnight writing period, and we kind of left it as it is, and then never really finished it. To me I just love the feel of it and even in its current form I like it. I always thought it had a lot of potential to be a great song."

Album Version

If everything would just stop
Then maybe I could collect my thoughts
If everything would stand still
I could've hidden how lost I feel
I should've said what I hear
I should've let myself fear
I should've made myself clear

So this is how we fall apart
This is how the ending starts
And when we find we've lost our mark
We fake what we don't know

I never asked to let go
I never thought I could sink so low
I never let myself down
Until the second I did right now
I should've said what I hear
I should've let myself fear
I should've made myself clear

So this is how we fall apart
This is how the ending starts
And when we find we've lost our mark
We fake what we don't know
This is how we fall apart
This is how the ending starts
Cause when our heads betray our hearts
We fake what we don't know

Cause all we are is everything we've done
All we are is how quickly we run
And all we are
We are

This is how we fall apart
But this is how beginnings start
Cause when our heads betray our hearts
We fake what we don't know
And if our doubt begins again
The answers find us in the end
So in the meantime we'll pretend
And fake what we don't know

This is how we fall apart
But this is how beginnings start
Cause when our heads betray our hearts
We fake what we don't know
And if our doubt begins again
The answers find us in the end
So in the meantime we'll pretend
And fake what we don't know
