Background

"Dirt Off Your Shoulder/Lying From You" is a mash-up between "Lying From You", from Linkin Park's Meteora, and "Dirt Off Your Shoulder", from Jay-Z's The Black Album. This mash-up was, along with "Numb/Encore", one of the first demos Mike Shinoda did after he got a call from Jay-Z's manager asking Linkin Park to perform a live show with Jay-Z for MTV.

The MTV performance spawned the idea to get into the studio with Jay-Z to re-perform the vocals, which, in the end, resulted in the Collision Course EP. Mike's verses from "Lying From You" and Chester's backing vocals were re-recorded.

"Dirt Off Your Shoulder/Lying From You" debuted at the MTV Ultimate Mash-Ups event in West Hollywood, California, along with the rest of the Collision Course tracks. Linkin Park and Jay-Z had to play each of the album's tracks twice due to lighting messing up. A little less than two weeks later, Jay-Z made a surprise appearance during Linkin Park's set in Holmdel, New Jersey on Projekt Revolution 2004, where he performed the first three songs of Collision Course with the band ("Dirt Off Your Shoulder/Lying From You" included).

The song was also performed at both 2005 shows, as well. The Music For Relief: Rebuilding South Asia performance featured a short intro pause for Jay-Z to come on stage after "Crawling", while the song was preceded by Jay-Z's "Public Service Announcement" at the Live 8 performance, as Linkin Park and Jay-Z combined their set times for one big performance.

The song did not return into the setlists in any form until 2014 during The Hunting Party tour cycle, though it almost made an appearance at the Milton Keynes, England show in 2008 during the Minutes To Midnight touring cycle. An earlier draft of the setlist showed "Dirt Off Your Shoulder/Lying From You" as the opener of the encore, but was ultimately dropped from the final setlist; instead, the studio version of "Lying From You" was performed instead with it's extended intro, with an abridged "Numb/Encore" opening the encore instead. An abridged version of the song was performed in Set B on the Carnivores Tour, which featured the first verse of the song transitioning out of Mike's Solo Medley, a chorus that sampled Jay-Z's vocals, the second verse and chorus of "Lying From You", the bridge of "Lying From You" featuring Jay-Z samples, the final chorus of "Lying From You", and the outro of "Dirt Off Your Shoulder/Lying From You". The song was dropped after the cancelled 2015 North American Tour.
