"Massive" is a song from the Meteora recording sessions that was officially released on the 20th Anniversary Edition of Meteora.
Background
"Massive" made its debut on April 4, 2023 on Linkin Park's takeover of SiriusXM Channel 41 Turbo for the Meteora 20 celebration. Mike Shinoda sings lead vocals on the song. The "heard the screaming in my dreaming" line was also present in the demo version of "In The End".
Mike said about the sound of the song:
“We started writing the album while we were touring for Hybrid Theory. So I think the vibes of some of the demos were inspired by being out on the road and playing in different places. When you’re on stage a lot and playing in front of people, you kind of intuit the ways a song could be effective. And I think that ‘Massive’ is a song that felt very ‘live show’ to me. It’s just big—hence the name.”
“I think part of it is also the guitars; they’re just really loud in the mix. So loud. But yeah, my singing on that was, again, where I was at at that time—very unpolished and squeaky. Chester always liked that one though. I remember he was one of the guys in the band that was in that song’s corner, but it didn’t make the cut.”[1]
When discussing the box set, Mike said about "Massive" and "Healing Foot", "One of those two I think I tried to resurrect during Minutes to Midnight, and again, it was like, "No man, we don't want to look backward at all." So this is all about that 2003 moment. There's a certain level of quality control going on. We want to make sure that when we put something together, it's thoughtful and we'’ve done our best. Is it going to be perfect? No. Is it going to appeal to everybody? Of course not. It never will be."[2]
Brad Delson did a track-by-track commentary of the Lost Demos disc for the "Super Deluxe Box Set" book. About "Massive", he wrote, "One massive massive. Drums and bass. Yeah, this is dope. I remember that riff. Awesome bridge."[3]
