Commencement 2009 - 2009 is a video podcast released by the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) on YouTube and iTunes. It depicts the main graduation commencement ceremony for the College of Letters and Science held annually on a Friday night in June in Pauley Pavilion. Brad Delson of Linkin Park was one of the speakers in the 2009 ceremony. During his keynote, he stripped down to a Bruins basketball jersey and shorts and performed a short cover of "I'm Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman", originally by Britney Spears.

Background

Erin Moore, a graduating English major started the Facebook campaign against James Franco's selection as speaker, contending that he had not accomplished enough in life to be a role model for graduates. As a result, Franco canceled his UCLA speech with only 10 days notice, saying that his filming schedule required him to be in Ireland.

A committee of administrators, faculty and students then turned to Brad Delson, who earned a bachelor's degree in communication studies from UCLA in 1999, to address an audience expected to number 10,000 in Pauley Pavilion at the graduation ceremony for the College of Letters and Science on June 12. Besides his work with nonprofit organization Music for Relief to aid victims of world catastrophes and combat global warming, Delson and his wife started a UCLA scholarship fund that aids promising students from Huntington Park.[1][2]

Cinematographer Haskell Wexler, received The UCLA Medal, awarded to those who have made truly extraordinary and distinguished contributions to their professions and to our society, at the 2009 UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television commencement. He entrusted footage from his own work to the Film & Television Archive and also has lectured to UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television classes and mentored alumni.[3]
