"Waiting For Tomorrow" is a single by Martin Garrix and Pierce Fulton featuring Mike Shinoda. The song is the fifth track on Martin Garrix' Bylaw EP.
Background
On November 5, 2015, Mike Shinoda posted a picture of himself and Dutch electronic artist Martin Garrix on Instagram.[1] This was followed by Martin posting a second picture with Mike with the caption "Another day in the lab".[2] During Episode 6 of LPAssociation's podcast, Mike said the pictures with Martin Garrix was nothing more than meeting with him and throwing out ideas.[3]
On March 18, 2016, Martin Garrix headlined the first night of the Ultra Music Festival in Miami, Florida, where he debuted a song called "Waiting For Tomorrow" featuring vocals by Mike Shinoda and Chester Bennington.[4] In this live version by Martin Garrix in 2016, Chester doubles Mike's vocals in the lead up vocals to the chorus and has backing vocals in the chorus as well. This is the only version of the song that Chester appears in as his vocals were subsequently removed from other versions.
American DJ Pierce Fulton, who also contributed to the song, performed a different version of "Waiting For Tomorrow" during his March 24, 2016 set for Glow Radio.[5]
On April 15, 2016, a 3-minute edit of the Pierce Fulton live version was shared on SoundCloud as being an studio version of the song. The fact that it was immediately taken down contributed to the belief it was a leak.[6] Artwork for the song was supposedly unveiled on April 17, 2016,[7] but it turned out to be fan made as well.
Martin Garrix's debut studio album was set to be released in 2016[8] and would feature other artists that included Ed Sheeran, Bebe Rexha and Third Party. In an interview he gave in early April, he said the album wasn't ready yet: "I have no name for the album yet, [though] I have been thinking about different options. However, I’m still in the process of making you songs. I think I have between 25 to 30 songs right now and then we’re going to pick the 13 best ones."[9] Through Twitter, Garrix said "Waiting For Tomorrow" "will probably just be on the album"[10] and the album would be released at "probably end of the year."[11]
Martin Garrix went live on Instagram in January 2017 to celebrate the official release of "Scared To Be Lonely" and teased "Waiting For Tomorrow", saying it would be released soon.[12] He went live again in June to announce the release of his single "We Did It" and mentioned "Waiting For Tomorrow" would be released soon through his own label, STMPD RCRDS.[13] That same month, he talked to 103.5 Kiss FM about how much music he had coming out and mentioned the track once again.[14] In October, he gave another update on the song saying "...due to the situation with Chester, I don't see it releasing anytime soon."[15]
During a Q&A session for the What We Started documentary film in April 2018, he gave another update on the status of the song, saying it was on indefinite hold. "Waiting For Tomorrow was together with Linkin Park and because of Chester's passing it's little bit hard to release the song. I don't know if we're ever gonna release it. I hope so, maybe one day. But not soon I think. We are working on it but I don't know yet. There's a lot of new unreleased music which I'm gonna release very soon."[16]
A new version of "Waiting For Tomorrow" was debuted by Martin Garrix on October 2, 2018 at the Vision & Colour Festival in Wuhan, China. On October 13, information regarding an EP containing the song was leaked and later confirmed by Garrix.[17] The EP, titled Bylaw, was released on October 19.
Mike Shinoda said, "A few years ago, I started a song with Martin Garrix, who came to the studio in LA while we were recording One More Light. In the following weeks, he was in preparations to headline Ultra Festival for the first time, and we agreed he should play the unfinished version of the song as a surprise. But afterwards, as the year unfolded, life took us in other directions, and the track remained unfinished...until now. In response to fan requests, we’re proud to announce that “Waiting For Tomorrow” is now available online everywhere. Shout out to Pierce Fulton and Brad Delson for their participation on this special track."[18] Linkin Park posted a video of the sessions just after the song was released, saying, "While in the studio for One More Light we had the opportunity to work with so many talented writers. One of those talents was Martin Garrix. Together, we created “Waiting For Tomorrow.” Here is a closer look at that first writing session." In the video, Joe Hahn can be seen as well, but there are no shots of Chester.[19]

Lyrics
Remember we were staring up to those peaks on the horizon
You told me if I faced my fear
There was no doubt I could climb them
There's nothing I have wanted more
The only one I've been waiting for
So hold your breath and close your eyes
The night is cold, but the sun will rise
Counting down, to the light
Through the night, just waiting for tomorrow
Almost there, almost time
All my life
Just waiting
It's only one more day, it's only one more day
It's only one more day, it's only one more
Waiting for tomorrow
Waiting for tomorrow
The fear is creeping up behind as this road is finally ending
I can't find order in my mind with this noise inside so deafening
There's nothing I have wanted more
The only one I've been waiting for
So hold your breath and close your eyes
The night is cold, but the sun will rise
Counting down, to the light
Through the night, just waiting for tomorrow
Almost there, almost time
All my life
Just waiting
It's only one more day, it's only one more day
It's only one more day, it's only one more
Waiting for tomorrow
Just waiting
It's only one more day, it's only one more day
It's only one more day, it's only one more day
It's only one more day, it's only one more day
It's only one more day, it's only one more
Waiting for tomorrow
Waiting for tomorrow
Waiting for tomorrow
Waiting for tomorrow
Remember we were staring up to those peaks on the horizon
I promised I would never stop it
In your name I would climb them
There's nothing I have wanted more
The only one I've been waiting for
So hold your breath and close your eyes
The end is unknown but still we rise
Counting down, to the light
Through the night, just waiting for tomorrow
Almost there, almost time
All my life
Just waiting
It's only one more day, it's only one more day
It's only one more day, it's only one more day
Waiting for tomorrow
Waiting for tomorrow
Counting down, to the light
Through the night, just waiting for tomorrow
Almost there, almost time
All my life
Just waiting for tomorrow
Counting down, to the light
Through the night, just waiting for tomorrow
Almost there, almost time
All my life
Just waiting for tomorrow
Remember we were staring up to those peaks on the horizon
I promised I would never stop it
In your name I would climb them
There's nothing I have wanted more
The only one I've been waiting for
So hold your breath and close your eyes
The end is unknown but still we rise
Counting down, to the light
Through the night, just waiting for tomorrow
Almost there, almost time
All my life
Just waiting
It's only one more day, it's only one more day
It's only one more day, it's only one more day
Waiting for tomorrow
Just waiting for tomorrow
Sleepless nights have paved my way
And this road is finally ending
I've killed for just the chance to be in this place where now I'm standing
The fear is creeping up behind on this courage I'm projecting
I can't find order in my mind with this noise inside so deafening
It's only one more day, it's only one more day
