"Lies Greed Misery" (stylized as "LIES GREED MISERY") is the fourth song on Linkin Park's album Living Things. "Lies Greed Misery" was released as a promotional single for the album, being "leaked" by fans after completing a scavenger hunt that the band set up. The song was officially released on May 24, 2012. The track, along with "Castle Of Glass", was used in promotion for Danger Close Game's Medal of Honor: Warfighter, being included in the multiplayer reveal trailer for the game.

Background

Chester talked about the creation of "Lies Greed Misery" in an interview with ABCDane.net, stating "This song was one of the rare kinds that just came out of nowhere. Mike told me to scream anything, just let out my anger and I did just that. Before we realized it, we had a song on our hands. In the beginning it seemed too pop, like a tune you could dance to. We had to take out the party vibe and add a darker ‘I’m enjoying your destruction’ element to it. I think this song represents the kind of emotions that arise from standing up to a bully, or when a tyrant is taken down and the people are celebrating around his grave. Like I said, it’s a really dark song, but it also has a weird ‘pizza party’ kind of feel to it. Maybe the combination of crazy style and symphony has something to do with that. You’re at a party outdoors, drinking margaritas, hanging with tanned people, maybe swimming… then you play this song. I mean, it is a party song after all. But that’s not all, you start screaming out loud. I hope you choke on your lies, swallow up your greed, suffer all alone in your misery. And well... it’s a terrible thing to say to someone. This song is incredibly complicated, mentally unstable maybe, but brilliant at the same time."[3]

Mike Shinoda, during his listening party with the fanbase for Living Things, mentioned that Chester had recorded his vocals for "Lies Greed Misery" while sick.[4] Chester also was shown on LPTV episodes for the album recording vocals while sick for both "Victimized" and "Until It Breaks."

Retrospectively, Shinoda considered this song, along with "Victimized", to be pre-cursors to The Hunting Party in a way.[5]

In a June 2019 leak of Mikes's MPC sample library and Maschine projects for several albums (posted under the fan-titled "Hybrid Party Of A Thousand Things"), a few samples were discovered in a demo recording called "Piledriver", which was the working title of the track.

Scavenger Hunt

In early May 2012, Linkin Park launched a global scavenger hunt for Living Things. LPAssociation quickly took the reigns of the hunt and helped guide fans, give updates, and ended up being the ones premiering the grand prize - this song - with Zane Lowe in London on May 24th.[6] The scavenger hunt involved fans from Europe, the United States, Japan, Brazil, Australia, and more.

Zane Lowe said, "The end of what will no doubt be a very exciting Scavenger Hunt for fans worldwide will come to its conclusion on Thursday, 7:30 PM hopefully, when all the pieces of the puzzle have been put together and one lucky fan who picks up the final piece AND THE RECORD, will be joining me in studio LIVE here on Radio 1, with Mike Shinoda on the phone, and we will get the Worldwide Exclusive first Play of the brand new record 7:30 on Thursday. Hardcore fans already know about this but for those who don't know the Scavenger Hunt has begun. Pieces of the record scattered all over the world, and by the clues you found on Chicago, Lincoln Park Zoo, fans were led to a bakery in Rio de Janeiro called Forte de Copacapabana, when they arrived they were given a card with that had the words "We are Born, and we Die. May 19th" and the card had a really fine hidden image on the background, they discovered that that image was from one of Mike Shinoda's art pieces from his Glorious Excess Dies art show. Led to realize that his art show Glorious Excess: Born and Glorious Excess: Dies to a place of the Japanese Art National Museum downtown Los Angeles, which is where the next clue is hidden. Has this been done before?"

Mike explained, "I basically came up with the pot of gold at the end. The team and I brainstormed where it ended - they ran with the meat of it in the middle. That requires a lot of legwork from people on the ground in each of these countries. Basically, we're going to do something for every fan who was involved in this thing - anyone who found a clue, anyone who translated anything - we're going to give them merchandise or tickets. The funniest part about it is we started it off in a low-key way" - Twitter feeds, mostly - "and let it build organically."[7]

Remix

"Lies Greed Misery" received one remix, done by Dirtyphonics, that was released on the band's second remix album, Recharged.

Lyrics

Album Version

I'mma be that nail in your coffin
Saying that I softened
I was ducking down to reload
So you can save your petty explanations
I don't have the patience
Before you even say it I know
You let your pride or your ego
Talk slick to me, no
That is not the way I get down
And look at how you lose your composure
Now let me show ya
Exactly how the breaking point sounds

I WANT TO SEE YOU CHOKE ON YOUR LIES
SWALLOW UP YOUR GREED
SUFFER ALL ALONE IN YOUR MISERY

What is it you want me to tell ya
I'm not the failure
I would rather live and let be
But you came with the right kind of threat to
Push me to let you
Know you can't intimidate me
You disrespect me so clearly
Now you better hear me
That is not the way it goes down
You did it to yourself and it's over
Now let me show ya
Exactly how the breaking point sounds

I WANT TO SEE YOU CHOKE ON YOUR LIES
SWALLOW UP YOUR GREED
SUFFER ALL ALONE IN YOUR MISERY [x2]

You did it to yourself [x4]
YOU DID IT TO YOURSELF [x4]

I WANT TO SEE YOU CHOKE ON YOUR LIES
SWALLOW UP YOUR GREED
SUFFER ALL ALONE IN YOUR MISERY
