Background

Beta State was founded by former members of Strata, who released two albums on Wind-Up. At Linkin Park's show in Mountain View, CA, on June 05, 2011, a group of fans approached Chester Bennington and gave him an iPod Touch saying, "We’re in a band called Beta State, and we’d be honored if you guys would check out our music."

After the show, Chester showed Phoenix and Mike Shinoda the iPod, which contained all of the band's songs and music videos as well as a note addressed to Mike. Phoenix said, "at this point, it almost doesn’t even matter what their band sounds like–they obviously get it." Mike appreciated their effort and posted about them on his blog.[1]

On July 22, 2013, Linkin Park announced a contest called LPU Sessions which allowed members of LP Underground over 18 years old in the United States to submit original material with a chance to work with the band in the studio and have their songs featured on the LP Underground XIII album. Submissions were accepted until August 4, 2013 and were judged by the LPU Headquarters. 10 finalists were announced on August 12, 2013 and were judged by LPU members, who were allowed to vote once a day for their favorite finalist until August 25, 2013. The winners were announced on September 3, 2013.[2]

The San Francisco band named Beta State, with the song "When I'm Too Weak To Know" off their #Friendship EP, was one of the winners of the Grand Prize Package, which included round trip tickets to Los Angeles, 2 nights hotel accommodations, roundtrip airport transfers in Los Angeles, 2 days in the Red Bull Studio with Linkin Park, a wrap party at the Hard Rock Cafe Hollywood and a Hard Rock Cafe gift pack.[3] After a few days of hard work in early October, they emerged with "Change".[4] Not only the song was produced by Linkin Park but it also features keyboards and samples by Mike Shinoda.

The song was started from the vocals, Matt McDonald said, "We had always talked about wanting to write this way, but it wasn’t until the LPU Sessions that we were able to make it happen for the first time. Usually, we would “jam” out ideas in our live room for hours, record live demos of the songs, and then go home and tweak them until the were done. With this approach, we naturally wrote music first and then vocals after, which can be limiting to what I may have wanted to do vocally. Now, we make everything much more collaborative, and once I have completed a vocal that everyone is satisfied with, we then restructure the music to fit the vocal in the best way possible. When we are sitting in front of a computer and recording ideas AS they happen, we can capture magical moments better, and also hear the whole song from objective point of view… instead of sitting in a loud studio where we can’t always hear what everyone is playing and are preoccupied with our own instruments."[5]

After the session, Beta State partnered with The Collective, the same management firm that works with Linkin Park.

"Change" was released on the LP Underground XIII CD in November 2013. On the booklet, Matt wrote: "LP brought such a positive and humbled approach to songwriting. Great vibes. It was like working with people I had known for years." Adrian wrote: "These guys are true professionals. It was a real treat to learn from their years of collective experience. There were no egos, just a room full of enthusiastic musicians trying ideas, working together to complete a song."

Lyrics

Album Version

Here, I wait / for a good thing to resolve
When I'm sinking in a ship I can't control
And I'm sick / with a smile I try and hide
Broken pieces of a lie, I can't let go

I never meant to let you down again
I had it all but watched it drown

Why does every good thing have to end?
I've burned every bridge before it began / (and, now, I'm sinking)
I changed, a man I thought I'd never be
I've burned every bridge before it began / I swear, I'm gonna change

Here, I wait / swimming in a sea of dark
I'm lost in the current of my faults
Here, I sink / holding on with all I had
The tide will rise / I'm gonna own what's mine

I never meant to let you down again
I had it all but watched it drown

Why does every good thing have to end?
I've burned every bridge before it began / (and, now, I'm sinking)
I changed, a man I thought I'd never be
I've burned every bridge before it began / I swear, I'm gonna change

All I wanna do is break free
All I wanna do is break free

I never meant to let you down again
I had it all but watched it drown

Why does every good thing have to end?
I've burned every bridge before it began / (and, now, I'm sinking)
I changed, a man I thought I'd never be
I've burned every bridge before it began / I swear, I'm gonna change

I swear I'm gonna change

(All I want to do is break free)
(All I want to do is break free) / I swear I'm going to change
