Background

LP Underground 16 is the seventeenth CD released by Linkin Park for their fanclub, the LP Underground. It was released on November 21, 2016 to coincide with the release of the newest iteration of the LP Underground, LPU 16. Only the first wave of orders included a physical copy of the CD. After that, the LPU 16 album was only available as a digital download.

Writing and Recording

The album contains a demo from 2014 and three from 2015, none of which have vocals despite of what the band said about working on vocals first on One More Light. This is possibly due to those demos being recorded before Linkin Park entered the studio in late 2015.

Mike Shinoda wanted to include demos of earlier songs on the CD to give fans an idea of how certain ideas came to be. Demos of previously released songs found on the CD are "The Catalyst", "Bleed It Out", "Lies Greed Misery". During a Facebook chat where the band revealed the LPU 16 package to fans, Mike referred to the "Bleed It Out" demo as "#84 (BIO Demo, 2007)".[1] Although "Lies Greed Misery" was originally released on Living Things, its demo dates from the A Thousand Suns sessions.

The other three demos on the album, "Symphonies Of Light Reprise", "Consequence A" and "Consequence B", all date from the A Thousand Suns sessions.

All tracks were mastered on October 28, 2016 at Bernie Grundman Mastering.

Composition

The album marked the return to the 10-track CD format, containing demos spanning from the Minutes To Midnight sessions in 2007 to the One More Light sessions in 2015. This was the first time since LP Underground 6.0 that songs from a current album sessions were released on an LPU CD.

The 2015 demo "Burberry" is actually a shortened version of "Space Station", a song released in 2012. Besides that, a loop from the 2015 demo "Dark Crystal" was released for Stagelight in 2014. This made fans question once again the accuracy of the dates on LPU demos, starting to question the band's intentions with these datings and coming as far as questioning the authenticity of the demos.
