Background

"Side Scrolling" is a song by Mike Shinoda made during the 2020 global COVID-19 pandemic.

In March 2020, the global pandemic created by the COVID-19 coronavirus caused communities to quarantine at home. During this time, Mike Shinoda decided to start live streaming online and inviting fans to watch him create new instrumental music.

"Side Scrolling" was a track made by Mike on May 4, 2020 under the working title "5.4.20 Return of the GB."[1]

Mike said, "Bringing back the Game Boy today. So the Game Boy, I used this before on one of the other tracks ("Super Galaxtica"). Sequencing software in the Game Boy, you can find this online. Just to show you that I'm actually sequencing this myself, you hear those notes? I'm playing with the notes now. So I'm going to record of a couple of these."

On the album release day steream on Twitch, "I didn't realize this until I was putting this together, how many songs I made using 8 bit sounds and 12 bit sounds. Like this is my second song with GameBoy sounds, where I used my hacked Game Boy. Yeah, "Super Galaxtica" from the first record and "Side Scrolling" from this record. I think "Side Scrolling" was called "Return of Game Boy" originally when we did the stream."[2]
