Background
Chester Bennington met Ryan Shuck and Amir Derakh when Orgy were working on their second record, Vapor Transmission, at NRG Recording Studios, the same studio Linkin Park was recording Hybrid Theory, and they immediately became best friends. After Linkin Park finished promoting and touring for Meteora, Chester started writing new songs and Ryan would always go to his house and hear them being played by Chester on acoustic guitar, thinking they were really good. Ryan then pushed Chester to convince his bandmates that those weren't Linkin Park songs and Chester started planning a solo album where he would play everything except for drums. Around the same time, Chester was teaching and coaching Ryan to sing in Julien-K and became so excited with what they were creating that he wanted to join the band, but they thought it would be better to work on a new project together instead. The new project was born one day in the studio when Ryan and Amir started playing with the guitar tracks Chester had recorded for "Let Down" and took the song to a place he never imagined he wanted.
With the release of Living Things in 2012, Linkin Park launched a remix subscription program caled "Living Things Remixed". Fans who pre-ordered the album from the official Linkin Park store would receive a new remix monthly during 8 months, starting June with "Burn It Down (RAC Remix)" and ending abruptly in December 2012 with "Powerless (Enferno Remix)" after only 7 months. Among the tracks scheduled for release were the remixes of "Lost In The Echo" by The Dual Personality and Elle Vozza who were, respectively, the Grand Prize Winner and Popular Vote Winner of Indaba Music's remix contest, but they never received an official release.

Towards the end of 2004, Dr. Henry Nicholas III — Co-Founder and former Co-Chairman, President and CEO of Broadcom Corporation — a billionaire and prominent philanthropist, decided to create a music company called Level 7, having Chester and members of Julien-K as business partners.

Chester started working on his solo album in 2005 when Linkin Park took a seven-month break. According to Ryan Shuck, they completed the album, but had to put the project on hold when Linkin Park started working on Minutes To Midnight, delaying the release of Dead By Sunrise's debut album to sometime in 2008. He said some of the material already dated back to five or six years. "When I started writing the music for Dead By Sunrise, I felt like they were stylistically outside (the band's) box," Chester explained. He described the record saying, "We took Nineties rock, mixed it with Eighties pop like Depeche Mode, the Cure and Bauhaus and smashed them together. It's fuckin' driving beats and walls of guitars." Those early songs included "Morning After", "Walking In Circles" and "Let Down", which was performed live at the ReAct Now: Music & Relief show. While "Give Me Your Name" was also written around that time, Chester said it wasn't actually intended for the album as he wrote it for his wedding which took place in December 2005.
Talking to The Huffington Post in July 2013, Mike Shinoda revealed Linkin Park were working on a new album and promised something very exciting for fans was coming in the following month. An August article from Yahoo! reads, "Linkin Park have already finished one song for their new album and the'll be releasing it soon, Bennington says. It was only after Projekt Revolution 2008 that Chester went back to work on his solo record, while simultaneously working with Linkin Park on A Thousand Suns, for a 2009 release. Besides writing new songs, the band also enlisted the help of Howard Benson, who drastically changed its overall sound as explained by Ryan, "On the album, the guitars were definitely heavier – there was a bit more grip to the record before and I think the label, when they heard the songs, were like “this could be all over the radio” and they wanted us to polish it up and make it shimmery." Pre-production was done at Ryan's house, tracking at Bay 7 Studios and vocals at Bay 7 as well as Sunset Sound. Afterwards, the band moved to Sparky Dark Studio (Howard Benson's home studio) to listen and put the finishing touches to the album. As for their writing process, Ryan said, "The songs start with Chester usually on an acoustic guitar as a little vocal melody, but it’s really sparse. Occasionally they’re more complete songs, but a lot of times he has an idea and a really good melody and we just sort of record that and he’ll literally go work with Linkin Park then. And we’ll build the song and write it, do the parts and everything, he’ll come back and he’ll get excited and then he’ll sing more on it and then he’ll go back and work with Linkin Park." Despite doing double duty, Chester said he was involved with every aspect of making the album, from the songwriting to the programming to performing with various instruments. According to him, the name "Dead By Sunrise" was partly inspired by the fact that they did most of their work from 3 o'clock until about 3 or 4 in the morning.
As Linkin Park received remixes for the Living Things remix subscription, the band enjoyed them so much they decided to compile the best remixes into an album. Mike said in the press release for Recharged, "After Reanimation I told many people I would never put together another album of remixes…but as I began to hear all the amazing reinterpretations of Living Things, I had to change my mind. The result, Recharged, is definitely worth it. I can’t wait for you guys to hear this amazing project, with contributions by Pusha T, Datsik, KillSonik, Bun B, Money Mark, and others. Our new song with Steve Aoki, A Light That Never Comes is on the album as well, plus a special remix of the new song by the inimitable Rick Rubin."

The lyrics were described by Chester as being very poetic and visual. "When I was writing the lyrics for Out of Ashes, I tried to use sentences that were really visual and words that inspired people to see a moving picture in their heads. That way, listeners can really catch the vibe of what the music is about. In doing so, there's a more colorful flare to the lyrics. That also allows people to feel how dark a lot of the record is. I think the darker thing are, the more they make an impact on you. In terms of writing, I definitely went a little more poetic on this album than normal."
Chester spoke to MTV about the EDM nature of the tracks, "I think any of our songs lend themselves well to being remixed; I think it just comes down to being inspired to do it. There were some moments on the last record, where we kind of felt like we had come full circle. We've established this identity of being a genre-less band, and so we figured we could take that even a bit further. We decided to let other artists come in and see where their vibe comes from ... and once we started working with artists like Steve Aoki and some of these EDM guys, it felt like a natural progression."

Songs that were originally written to deal with Chester's personal feelings about God (such as "Fire" and "Too Late") were changed lyrically because he felt some people get uncomfortable with this subject matter. "Condemned", "Inside Of Me" and the final version of "Fire" were conceived towards the end of those later sessions with Howard Benson, when Chester decided he would write "3 really great rock songs" and did so within 8 hours.

The exact date of the CD is hard to be determined because the band had worked on the songs for many years and the quality of the tracks vary a lot. With the exception of the "Morning After" remix (released on the Underworld Evolution soundtrack), none of the tracks are fully mastered or mixed, and some of them are very loud and brickwalled.
There's no date on the CD and "A Light That Never Comes" isn't in the tracklist, but there's a note in the CD that reads "Living Things Remixes Plus One NEW TRACK **NEW TRACK TBD Not Included At This Time**", meaning the song was already recorded. According to Steve Aoki, the track was started in January 2013 while the remix (also absent from the disc) was started in late June. Mike Shinoda's remix of "Victimized" is missing from the tracklist as well. Like Recharged, Living Things Remixes doesn't present any remixes of "In My Remains" either. Mike confirmed the band received a remix of the song, but didn't like it enough to release. "We actually didn't get a great remix of the song. We liked all these remixes a lot more...maybe that means we got it right on the original of IN MY REMAINS? HA" The bridge from the final version was originally the chorus. Other notable difference in the CD is that the bridge in "Fadeaway" is repeated in place of the fourth verse. "Morning After" is the only demo not to have any lyrical differences.
"Castle Of Glass (Linkin Park Remix)" is a demo version of Mike Shinoda's remix from Recharged. The track presents a different beginning and completely different ending.

Around June 2007, a picture posted on Julien-K's official website revealed a songboard with the titles of all the songs contained in this demo, with "In The Darkness" being the only song that made the album not featured in the CD. This, and the absence of songs from the later sessions, could mean the recordings date from 2005 up to sometime before mid-2007 while the CD itself dates to sometime after the Level 7 incident (as it features the Warner Bros. logo). It's also important to note that "Into You" already had its final title on the board, while it is listed as "Fadeaway" on the demo.
While "Roads Untraveled (Rad Omen Remix feat. Bun B)" is the same as the remix from the Living Things remix subscription (with a longer boom echo at the ending when compared to the version on Recharged); "Until It Breaks (Money Mark Remix)", despite the title, is the exact same remix released on Recharged under the title "Until It Breaks (Money Mark Headphone Remix)" which is a modified version of the remix released to fans who pre-ordered Living Things, featuring a different beat.

In early 2009, Mike Shinoda posted on his blog about Chester playing him 9 songs from Dead By Sunrise, but it's unknown if that was the same CD.
About half of the tracks on the disc are simply mixed differently from their final versions. The Schoolboy remix of "I'll Be Gone" has more audible effects and the DJ Vice remix has a cut ending. On the DJ Vice remix, Chester singing "I'll be gone" at 03:12 (Recharged time) is longer. "Skin To Bone (Nick Catchdubs Remix)", besides having more audible - and different - effects and low volume, has no high hat at the end. "Burn It Down (Tom Swoon Remix)" has more audible high hats from 00:30 onwards. "Lost In The Echo (KillSonik Remix)", which is mislabed as "KilSonik" on the tracklist, is almost identical to the final version, with minor volume changes.

The fact that the CD is credited to Chester Bennington (despite the band already being named at the time) could be explained by the following quote: "We were called Snow White Tan for a while, and then I changed the name to Dead By Sunrise, but I really just like Chester Bennington."
"Powerless (DJ Enferno Remix)" and "Burn It Down (Paul Van Dyk Remix)" were both shortened from their previously released versions. While "Burn It Down" is essentially the album version cut at 05:30; "Powerless" had many sections cut throughout the song.

Living Things Remixes is a watermarked CD of Linkin Park rough demos for Recharged. All tracks on this promo CD are unmixed and not mastered. The disc was obtained by LPCatalog in 2015 but its content can't be released to the public due to an agreement between the fan site and the person whose name is on the CD. A rundown of the tracks was posted on September 22, 2019 on LPLive.[1]

Background

With the release of Living Things in 2012, Linkin Park launched a remix subscription program caled "Living Things Remixed". Fans who pre-ordered the album from the official Linkin Park store would receive a new remix monthly during 8 months, starting June with "Burn It Down (RAC Remix)" and ending abruptly in December 2012 with "Powerless (Enferno Remix)" after only 7 months.[2][3][4] Among the tracks scheduled for release were the remixes of "Lost In The Echo" by The Dual Personality and Elle Vozza who were, respectively, the Grand Prize Winner and Popular Vote Winner of Indaba Music's remix contest, but they never received an official release.[5][6]

Writing and Recording

Talking to The Huffington Post in July 2013, Mike Shinoda revealed Linkin Park were working on a new album and promised something very exciting for fans was coming in the following month.[7] An August article from Yahoo! reads, "Linkin Park have already finished one song for their new album and the'll be releasing it soon, Bennington says. The track features a yet-unnamed special guest."[8]

Our new song with Steve Aoki, A Light That Never Comes is on the album as well, plus a special remix of the new song by the inimitable Rick Rubin."[9]

We decided to let other artists come in and see where their vibe comes from ... and once we started working with artists like Steve Aoki and some of these EDM guys, it felt like a natural progression."[10]

Composition

There's no date on the CD and "A Light That Never Comes" isn't in the tracklist, but there's a note in the CD that reads "Living Things Remixes Plus One NEW TRACK **NEW TRACK TBD Not Included At This Time**", meaning the song was already recorded. According to Steve Aoki, the track was started in January 2013 while the remix (also absent from the disc) was started in late June.[11][12][13] Mike Shinoda's remix of "Victimized" is missing from the tracklist as well. HA"[14]

"Castle Of Glass (Linkin Park Remix)" is a demo version of Mike Shinoda's remix from Recharged.[15] The LPTV episode from Australia and New Zealand 2013 entitled "You're A Legend" which came out on April 29, 2013 features part of this remix.[16] The track presents a different beginning and completely different ending.

"Powerless (DJ Enferno Remix)" and "Burn It Down (Paul Van Dyk Remix)" were both shortened from their previously released versions. While "Burn It Down" is essentially the album version cut at 05:30; "Powerless" had many sections cut throughout the song.
