"In The Darkness" is the twelfth and final track on the album Out Of Ashes by Dead By Sunrise.

Background

"In The Darkness" is one of Chester's favorite songs on Out Of Ashes, right next to "Give Me Your Name". Elias Andra also says it is, by far, his favorite song on the record.[1] The song's working title, "Darkness", was unveiled through a songboard picture posted by Julien-K on their official website in 2007.[2] The song was originally planned for inclusion on the The Twilight Saga: New Moon soundtrack, but Twilight wanted the song exclusively, which meant it couldn't be released on Out Of Ashes. The band turned down the offer for this reason.[3]

The lyrics were written about Chester's relationship with his second wife, Talinda Ann Bentley.[4]

Chester experimented writing about human relationships in a raw, naked manner in songs like "Give Me Your Name" and "In The Darkness", but says "Into The Darkness was more up my alley in that it was kind of a love song but it was dark and twisted at the same time. I don't know if anybody else finds it romantic, but when I sing 'I want to open my skin and pull you in,' I find it sexy, the idea of wanting somebody so badly that you want to become one with them; you want to inhabit their body and vice-versa. It was hard to open myself up in that way because I usually write about doom and gloom and 'poor me' shit."[5]

In an interview with KROQ, Amir said that the song was referred to as "The Darkness" and featured an Indian drum sampler beat to start the song. He described how demo ideas like that sometimes didn't even end up in the final versions of the songs.[6] In the final version of the song, Ryan Shuck is doing the beatboxing.
