Background

In an interview with 987 FM in August 2018, Mike mentioned "Brooding." The interviewer asked him, "How did you record "Brooding"? Was it just you in the studio hitting the record button, just playing all the instruments available?" to which Mike replied, "Yeah, I mean all of the songs on Post Traumatic are kind of done that way. Like a lot of them started as jams or they started as little loops in my computer, sometimes in my phone. The interesting thing about "Brooding" - it's the only instrumental on the album. And the reason that's the case is that I tried to put lyrics over it and I didn't like the sound of my voice on it. So I just left it the way it was."[1]

When giving interviews for Post Traumatic, he said that the album was in chronological order, for the most part, with the timing on when the songs were written. He told Billboard, "At a certain point that processing was taking different shapes and the song topics started to change. I think you hear that on the album. It's 16 songs, and the first half of it or so is more kind of backwards-looking, and then it starts to look into the present and future a little bit as it goes. The song "Crossing A Line" is right in the middle, and the second half of the album starts to look forward to other things and even takes little breaks from what was happening -- like, there's a song called "Lift Off" which is more of a battle rap kind of song, which is just escapism and is actually a pretty fun song."[2]

Music Video

Mike Shinoda released the music video for "Brooding" on August 3rd, 2018, following a teaser by Mike on August 1st.[3] The video was produced by Amigo and Company and directed by Rob Daly and Mark Fiore.

The video shows a man walking into the ocean where he is thrown back by the waves, which sends him tossing and flipping in the air before he returns to the shore.

About the music video, Mike said the day of its release, "Mark Fiore has been creating visuals w/ me for over a decade. He teamed up w/ director Rob Daly to create this performance-based concept that I felt captured POST TRAUMATIC’s lone instrumental in a whole new light. Enjoy this stunning visual for BROODING."[4]
