"Points Of Authority" is the fourth track on the album Hybrid Theory. A CD single for the song was set to be released on the UK on September 17, 2001, but instead, "Papercut" was released as the third single from the album on September 25, 2001. The song was later intended to be the fifth and final single from the album, with a release set to January 7, 2002, but it was cancelled. Despite not being released as a single, a music video for "Points Of Authority" was made and used to promote the Frat Party At The Pankake Festival DVD, in which it was included.
Background
"Points Of Authority" originated from the drum beat of a demo called "Oh No", which was released on November 17, 2010 on the LP Underground X: Demos CD. According to Mike Shinoda, "Points Of Authority" was a song that never lost its working title, however, a few Warner Bros. internal demo CDs have the song listed as "Points And Authority".
Another demo of the song was released on the LP Underground 12 CD on November 16, 2012. On the booklet, Brad Delson wrote: "One of my favorite songs from our Hybrid Theory writing sessions. You'll notice the bridge from the album version is actually the chorus in this early version. The bridge here was ultimately replaced by the demo chorus - our version of musical darwinism."
On an article published by Rolling Stone on March 14, 2002, Rob Bourdon explained how the riff of the song came together: "Brad wrote this riff, then went home. Mike decided to cut it up into different pieces and rearranged them on the computer. [Shinoda rewrote Delson's riff so completely, Bourdon says,] that Brad had to learn his own part from the computer. [Delson wasn't bugged.] Mike is a genius, [he declares.] Trent Reznor-talented."[1]
Mike explained, "The cut-up guitar on POA was originally a different, less-exciting riff. Brad suggested we re-write it; I agreed and decided to cut it up instead."[2]
As the band was playing their songs to producer Don Gilmore, the only ones he liked were "Points Of Authority" and "With You". This made the band feel comfortable enough with both songs to make them available on their website later. As for the rest of the album, Chester told Kerrang!, "We basically had to write a new record in two months. We stayed at Mike’s house around the clock and wrote that album."[3]
In an interview with the fan site Linkin Park Web, Mike said, "The most difficult song to do might be “Points of Authority”. That song didn’t have a chorus for the longest time (months). In the studio, Don (our producer) was putting a lot of pressure on us to write more to it, and it took forever for Brad, Chester, and I to come up with it. Writing a song under pressure is like trying to pee with people watching you."[4]
Composition
Due to Phoenix being out of the band at this time (1999 to October 2000) to tour with The Snax, he did not record bass on any songs on the Hybrid Theory EP or Hybrid Theory. Brad Delson recorded the bass on "With You", "Points Of Authority", "Crawling", "Runaway", "By Myself", "In The End", and "Pushing Me Away".
Demos
Of any Linkin Park, "Points Of Authority" is one of the songs with the most demos available, since the band was working hard on it in 1999 and 2000.
Chronologically, the first demo for "Points Of Authority" is titled "Oh No" and was included on the LP Underground X: Demos CD in November 2010. It is the original "seed" for the track and is an instrumental, but it's before the song really took shape. A longer, but slightly different, version of this demo was included in the 2019 Hybrid Party Of A Thousand Things leak.
The demo "Points & Authority" or "Points And Authority" (note the name) appears on three different demos - the Hybrid Theory 9-Track Demo CD, the Hybrid Theory 8-Track Demo, and the Hybrid Theory 7-Track Demo CD. In this version, Mike raps the second chorus only once instead of twice, and there is a shorter gap between the second verse and the third chorus. This is the most common demo with Linkin Park fans as it has been circulating since Christmas 2004.
On the LP Underground 12 CD, Linkin Park released another demo of "Points Of Authority" that is unique. In this demo, the second chorus is repeated, the chorus is the intro of the album version, there is a break between the second verse and the third chorus, but most notably, the breakdown of the song contains the lyrics "it's time to sink or swim."
The Hybrid Theory 6-Track Demo CD from April 2000 contains a later version of the song. It was also released for free download on the band's website hybridtheory.com. In this demo, there are alternate rap lines from Mike where he says, "forfeit the game / stop the talk show."
On the Hybrid Theory (Unmastered Studio Finals 5/7/00) CD, the song has a different mix and the only other difference is that the intro sample doesn't stop at the end of Mike's first vocal part of the song.
Remix
Linkin Park released a remix of "Points Of Authority" on Reanimation in July 2002 titled "Pts.Of.Athrty". The track was remixed by Jay Gordon, lead singer of Orgy, Nova For The Astro Americans, and Doug Trantow. When performing live in summer 2004, Linkin Park used the beginning of the remix as the intro for the song.
The Crystal Method remixed "Points Of Authority" as well, and although it was not included on Reanimation, it was released on the LP Underground 2.0 CD in November 2002.
DJ Z-Trip also began a remix for the song, but it was never finished.
In 2004 for Collision Course, Linkin Park mashed up "Points Of Authority" with "99 Problems'" by Jay-Z, as well as "One Step Closer", as "Points Of Authority/99 Problems/One Step Closer."

Live
"Points Of Authority" has appeared in Linkin Park setlists since 2000 (and quite possibly, even before). Throughout the Hybrid Theory touring cycle, "Points Of Authority" was regularly performed as a mid-set song. While the band was experimenting the song placement with their setlists on the Ozzfest in 2001, it is quite possible "Points Of Authority" opened the show in East Troy, Wisconsin. While it is possible "Forgotten" opened the show instead (as we do not know the full setlist for that show), it would be the only time "Points Of Authority" had ever opened a show. The song returned to it's regular mid-set position for the rest of the Hybrid Theory touring cycle. At the band's late night performance at Rock im Park, "Points Of Authority" had some extensions added on to it: before the song, the "LEE Interlude" was performed before it - the interlude usually came before "Papercut". Mike also performed an extended beatbox intro before the song.
The song returned to the setlists on the Meteora touring cycle, where it reassumed its mid-set position. Starting on the Meteora International Tour, "Points Of Authority" finally received its first consistent extension. It featured a new extended intro, which was a piece of the song's remix from Reanimation, "Pts.Of.Athrty". The song retained the extended intro for the rest of the Meteora cycle. The studio version of the song was performed again for the Summer Sonic performances in 2006.
"Points Of Authority" was dropped for the first few shows on the Minutes To Midnight Promotional Tour. After six shows, the band finally performed it again starting at their show at the Bamboozle in New Jersey. The song returned with a brand new intro, entitled "Intro #1", along with Mike rapping the his verse from the song over the new intro leading into the main song. Mike continued to perform the intro in this fashion, until a few shows into Projekt Revolution 2007. Beginning in Phoenix, Arizona, Mike began incorporating various verses from older Linkin Park songs as well as Fort Minor tracks - in Arizona's case, he rapped "Petrified" by Fort Minor. Common verses over the extended intro in 2007 included "Petrified", "Step Up", and "In Stereo". Mike also performed rarer verses, including songs with Fort Minor that never debuted live, such as "Respect 4 Grandma" and "Bloc Party". Beginning in 2008, the band added on an outro to the song for the first time, which was essentially just a band jam. On the second tour of the year, the Minutes To Midnight North American Tour, Mike began rapping "There They Go" by Fort Minor over the outro. When the band had to drop the song for a few shows near the end of the tour due to Chester being sick, they tacked the outro onto "Papercut" instead. "There They Go" remained exclusive to the outro until 2009, where Mike began to experiment more with it, rapping verses from "Reading My Eyes" and "A Place For My Head" over it. 2009 featured some unique verses over the intro, as well (mostly due to mistake). Towards the end of the tour, Mike asked on his blog for suggestions of verses for the song which resulted in "Step Up" and "Dedicated" being rapped over the intro.[7] In 2009, the band also changed up the instrumental of the intro, which then became "Intro #2". In Stuttgart, Germany featured a mashup of the first verse of "High Voltage" and a verse of "Bloc Party".
After an upwards of a nine year run, "Points Of Authority" was dropped during the A Thousand Suns World Tour. On the last show of the A Thousand Suns European Tour, in London, England, both "Points Of Authority" and "Somewhere I Belong" (another song that was not performed on the touring cycle) were listed on potential setlists for the night, but neither were ultimately played. The song did not return to the setlists until the Living Things touring cycle, where the band brought back many older songs including "Points Of Authority", "With You", "Runaway", and "Somewhere I Belong" for the first time in years. The song was performed as its studio version for the entirety of the cycle. An exception to this would be on the first night in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where Brad and Rob did a hit outro to the song. The intro of the song had the guitar track with a splicer effect on it so that it could imitate the palm-muting effect.
The song returned on The Hunting Party World Tour, where it was played near the end of Act I of the setlist (before "One Step Closer"). It segued right off of the extended outro of "Given Up", where it was performed with a new shortened intro. The song was performed consistently throughout the touring cycle. On the Carnivores Tour, "Points Of Authority" was replaced by "With You" in Set B, but was still performed in Set A. The song was dropped in the beginning of 2015, with "From The Inside" being its replacement. It did not return until the short Mexico Tour in June for the full version of the U.S. Festival set.
Though the full song did eventually make its way into the set during the The Hunting Party tour, the initial draft of the 2014 set had the intro rap being done over the ending of the "Mike Solo Medley" before transitioning into a shortened, instrumental version of the song.[8]
"Points Of Authority" was included as a part of the "rotation slot" on the One More Light cycle, being added at the band's show in Berlin. It was rotated with "Somewhere I Belong", "From The Inside", and "A Place For My Head". During the band's extended sets in London, "Points Of Authority" was played earlier in the set on night two, being played after "New Divide".
"Points Of Authority" was given a staple spot in the set for the From Zero world tour, being added to the set at the band's first "full" show of the cycle in Los Angeles during act 1. The song remained in the same key as the album version, though Mike took over lead vocals during the verses.

Lyrics
Forfeit the game
Before somebody else
Takes you out of the frame
And puts your name to shame
Cover up your face
You can't run the race
The pace is too fast
You just won't last
You love the way I look at you
While taking pleasure in the awful things you put me through
You take away if I give in
My life
My pride is broken
You like to think you're never wrong
(You live what you've learned)
You have to act like you're someone
(You live what you've learned)
You want someone to hurt like you
(You live what you've learned)
You want to share what you have been through
(You live what you've learned)
You love the things I say I'll do
The way I hurt myself again just to get back at you
You take away when I give in
My life
My pride is broken
You like to think you're never wrong
(You live what you've learned)
You have to act like you're someone
(You live what you've learned)
You want someone to hurt like you
(You live what you've learned)
You want to share what you have been through

You have to act like you're someone
(You live what you've learned)
You want someone to hurt like you
(You live what you've learned)
You want to share what you've been through
(You live what you've learned)
You love the things I say I'll do
The way I'll hurt myself again just to get back at you
You take away when I give in
My life, my pride is broken
You like to think you're never wrong
(You live what you've learned)
You have to act like you're someone
(You live what you've learned)
You want someone to hurt like you
(You live what you've learned)
You want to share what you've been through
(You live what you've learned)
Yo, yo
Forfeit the game
Stop the talk show
Product of what
You're taught to know
Forfeit the game
Cause tomorrow
When it's all done
Reap what you sow
Forfeit the game
Stop the talk show
Product of what
You're taught to know
Forfeit the game
Cause tomorrow
When it's all done
You reap what you sow
You like to think you're never wrong
(You live what you've learned)
You have to act like you're someone
(You live what you've learned)
You want someone to hurt like you
(You live what you've learned)
You want to share what you've been through
(You live what you've learned)
You like to think you're never wrong
(Forfeit the game)
(You live what you've learned)
You have to act like you're someone
(Forfeit the game)
(You live what you've learned)
You want someone to hurt like you
(Forfeit the game)
(You live what you've learned)
You want to share what you've been through
(You live what you've learned)
