"Isolation Bird (feat. Money Mark)" is the fourth track on the Dropped Frames, Vol. 2 instrumental release by Mike Shinoda. The track was teased on promotional artwork for Dropped Frames, Vol. 1 on Mike's official store.
Background
"Isolation Bird" is a song by Mike Shinoda made during the 2020 global COVID-19 pandemic.
In March 2020, the global pandemic created by the COVID-19 coronavirus caused communities to quarantine at home. During this time, Mike Shinoda decided to start live streaming online and inviting fans to watch him create new instrumental music.
"Isolation Bird" was made on April 16, 2020 by Mike under the working title "MoneyMark Corona Isolation Jam" and streamed live to fans via Twitch.[1]
Mike said, "I've gotta give a shout out, if you guys didn't know, Money Mark, you know Mark's work from stuff with the Beastie Boys and stuff like that. He's a very talented and creative dude. Similar to what I've been doing, he's been doing these, what he calls Isolation Jams. And if you haven't gotten a chance... they're bananas. He does so many things on there. So many of us are so used to working on the computer so to work completely out of the box and start plugging in circuits to one another, things that aren't even instruments really, and make songs out of things that aren't even instruments is incredible. Mark is incredible. So I was watching them and I saw a couple of them that I thought would be a cool starting point. Like we could use those almost as like a sample and make something out of it. So I put three of them up on my Instagram. The one that you guys kind of helped me choose was this one."
Mike posted on his Instagram story three of the tracks that Money Mark had made recently - "Isolation jams number 7"[2], "Isolation jams number ten"[3], and "Isolation Jams number 26."[4]
Fans selected "Isolation Jams number 26." Money Mark said about this track, "Isolation Jams number 26....Art Basel Miami Dec2019 a banana was duct taped to a wall. It sold for $120k. Another artist came into the gallery and ate it! When we all should of been focusing on the coming Corona virus we were fussing over a banana. It’s a new world and this may be the beginning of my DaDa Songs. Using a Yamaha DD-55c playable drum machine and a Boss voice box w a piezo mic taped to my throat. The visual effect is by setting the tripod on a plastic box next to the bass speaker."
Mike mentioned, "So Mark's got a Yamaha DD55C playable drum machine. He's playing it with a mallet and like a hammer and he's using a voice box mic like taped to his throat so it's not to the front of his mouth, it's down here, and he's singing on that, and the mic's just picking up the sound of the resonance coming through his throat. And also just to note, the music is turned up so loud that the camera, every time he hits a bass drum, it shakes. And then he drops his stuff, and he hits his crash stuff and it's over. So we're going to start from that and we're going to make something out of it."
Describing how he worked on the song, Mike said, "I just put it in Ableton but I did go in and put it on the grid so if you see all of these yellow markets, you can let Ableton automatically do that and it'll do an ok job sometimes but with something as human as what Mark's performance was, I went in and put my own markers to try and retain as much of that as possible. Because when a human plays, it'll waver in terms of tempo. I put it at 140ish because he's playing at 140ish, now it's in the computer locked on the grid, so here we go. Maybe we just loop the beat at the top. So I'm going to try and make a drum beat over the top of this thing here."
On the album release day stream on Twitch, Mike said, "This one is a fun one. This one was taken from an Instagram post by Money Mark that I just loved. He was doing these Isolation Jams. And he like taped this little microphone bit to his throat and sang. And he did these kind of like, toy drums. But I added all of this other music over the top here. Mark's great by the way, if you don't follow Mark Instagram or whatever, do that. He's highly entertaining, he's like a mad scientist. It's really weird to think that's Mark's voice."[5]
Linkin Park fans are already familiar with Money Mark, because he remixed "Until It Breaks" in 2013 for the Recharged album.
Money Mark tweeted about the collaboration the day the album was released. A fan said, "So stoked to see @mikeshinoda link up w/ @moneymark again since he "Recharged" Until It Breaks! Lovin the 2nd volume of #DroppedFrames"[6] and Money Mark replied, "So cool."[7]
