Background

In March 2020, the global pandemic created by the COVID-19 coronavirus caused communities to quarantine at home. During this time, Mike Shinoda decided to start live streaming online and inviting fans to watch him create new music.

Writing and Recording

The streams were originally called "Beat Making Demos" by Mike but then he shifted to the tag "CoronaJams".

Mike's first streams were done via Instagram Live on his phone. The first stream took place on March 17th and was a beat making demo for his solo song "Open Door". Mike decided to quickly mix the demo and text it to fans via the Community app. He later announced a contest for fans to record vocals to add to the song as well as to design the cover artwork for the single.

March 25th was Mike's last stream via Instagram Live as on March 27th he shifted to using Twitch and then using Restream to also broadcast the Twitch stream on Periscope, YouTube, and Facebook.

Throughout March, April, and May 2020, Mike has streamed sessions of creating CoronaJams. He has taken requests from fans at times for themes of the jams, as fans can earn enough "Shinodabucks" via Twitch to request a specific theme. He has also done CoronaJams based on unique themes or ideas that he is inspired by. For example, he created a "Hybrid Theory" style CoronaJam, a "Reanimation" style CoronaJam, an "A Thousand Suns" style CoronaJam, a Nintendo Game Boy sounds CoronaJam, a CoronaJam based specifically on samples from Money Mark's Instagram, and more. Some of the CoronaJams are based on themes Mike enjoys, such as 90s hip hop or 80s music.
