Slip

"Slip" is the second track on LP Underground Eleven. The song is one of Mike Shinoda's favorite Hybrid Theory demos.[1][2]

Background

"Slip" was written when Linkin Park was still called "Xero" and had Mark Wakefield on vocals. The song was later recorded and reworked with Chester Bennington.

On the booklet of the LP Underground Eleven CD, Mike Shinoda wrote: "We did various versions of this song, but never felt compelled to release the song. It has never been released until now. It was in the first batch of songs (with "Blue") that we worked on together when Chester joined the band."

Although the track title says "1998", the version on the LPU CD features Chester on vocals, meaning it was recorded after 1998.

In Jeff Blue's book "One Step Closer: From Xero to #1: Becoming Linkin Park", he explained that recording for Hybrid Theory began on March 7, 2000 at NRG Studios. Rob's drum tracking began on March 14 and he tracked drums for "Slip" on March 16.[3]

Live

Hybrid Theory can be seen rehearsing a version of the song in a studio in Hollywood Blvd. & Ivar with bassist Scott Koziol during the episodes "jammin with linkin park" and "DJ Joe of Linkin Park" of Marc Ostrick's webseries Lockout, recorded on February 24, 2000. The guitar riff heard on the video at the beginning of the song is in the bridge of the LPU 11 demo. Rob's drum part is more complex in the video version too.

In the center of the silence, violent thoughts are thrown through
The thick smoke and flickering lights that brighten the room
All the things that you wanted to say
Get lost and thrown away
You can fade and hesitate to speak your mind
Can't turn back when you cross the line
Sometimes it's someone you know who just doesn't care
Has to see you go to know you were there

This is the sun behind the rain
Even though sometimes I feel I can't stand another minute
May've begun to run an endless race
But I never looked back
When I begin it
Know that this is the sun behind the rain
Even though sometimes I feel I can't stand another minute
May've begun to run an endless race
But I never looked back
When I begin it

I know all of this will soon be gone
You don't really have to prove them wrong

Sometimes you've got no control of where you go
Taking you down a road you don't know
And you feel so lost that you wanna hide your face
You don't recognize the place you're in
Sometimes the sun doesn't shine your way
Sometimes the night doesn't turn to day
Sometimes the light's so bright it burns through the night and keeps the darkness at bay
(Run away)

This is the sun behind the rain
Even though sometimes I feel I can't stand another minute
May've begun to run an endless race
But I never looked back
When I begin it
Know that this is the sun behind the rain
Even though sometimes I feel I can't stand another minute
May've begun to run an endless race
But I never looked back
When I begin it

I know all of this will soon be gone
You don't really have to prove them wrong
I know soon enough you'll make them see
You'll be far away from them with me

Follow the link in the chain without a name
Seal the light and the darkened days remains
Taken away from the place you've been trapped
Break all you know then bring it all back

This is the sun behind the rain
Even though sometimes I feel I can't stand another minute
May've begun to run an endless race
But I never looked back
When I begin it
Know that this is the sun behind the rain
Even though sometimes I feel I can't stand another minute
May've begun to run an endless race
But I never looked back
When I begin it

I know all of this will soon be gone
You don't really have to prove them wrong
I know soon enough you'll make them see
You'll be far away from them alone with me
