Background

"LOATR/SOTD/Iridescent", coined in the live guide as the Ballad Medley, is a medley consisting of parts of some of the band's ballads from Minutes To Midnight and A Thousand Suns. It features parts of "Leave Out All The Rest", "Shadow Of The Day", and "Iridescent". It was added into the setlist on the Living Things World Tour, likely created in order to be able to include these songs in the setlist, which was becoming increasingly tight with the band's growing discography.

It begins with a piano version of "Leave Out All The Rest", with Mike on keys and Chester singing the first verse first chorus of the track. The song then segues into "Shadow Of The Day", with Rob adding drums into the mix. Chester sings the first verse and first chorus of the song, and Brad starts playing the guitar from the second verse of "Iridescent" as the "Shadow Of The Day" chorus concludes. After that section, Brad plays the guitar solo of "Iridescent" and the band performs the bridge of the song to the end.

A variation of the song was performed at the band's appearance at the UCLA Evening Of Environmental Excellence. The event was hosted by Cheryl Hines, the actress well known from the TV show "Curb Your Enthusiasm". The band was honored with an award for Music For Relief by the UCLA Institute of the Environment and Sustainability (producer Lawrence Bender and U.S. Representative Henry Waxman also received the reward). The award was presented by the institute's students Kyle Graycar and Jessica Galvin. Only Mike, Chester, Rob, and Joe appeared at the event; Mike joked about it in his speech by claiming they were watching the B.R.U.I.N.S game.

Mike and Chester performed a special mashup after the speech. Mike took a moment with the crowd to ask who had heard of Linkin Park's music, and told those people to not buy their new album coming out that summer (The Hunting Party) based on the performance. The performance consisted of the beginning part of the Ballad Medley, the parts of "Leave Out All The Rest" and "Shadow Of The Day" being performed entirely with piano and vocals. Instead of "Shadow Of The Day" transitioning into "Iridescent" as it normally would, it transitioned into "What I've Done". The song was performed in its entirety, barring the guitar solo section - the second chorus went directly into the final chorus.

Live

The Ballad Medley debuted at the first show of the Living Things touring cycle appearing mid-set, normally following "Breaking The Habit". The song didn't change much throughout the tour. The only notable time something was different was when Mike played a brief snippet of "Für Elise" as an intro to the song on the Honda Civic Tour off-show in Calgary, Canada. In January 2014, at the Concert For The Philippines, the band was joined by The Filharmonic from the show "Sing Off" to perform the "Iridescent" part of the track, adding an a cappella outro the highlight them. The song returned on The Hunting Party tour, remaining in the mid-set position but segueing out of the piano outro of "Castle Of Glass". The medley was performed acoustically at a private acoustic set in at the LPU / Machine Shop headquarters, making it the only time medley was performed acoustically. At the first few shows of the 2015 European Tour, Mike performed a short piano cover of Idina Menzel's "Let It Go" from "Frozen" instead of the traditional piano ending to "Iridescent", perhaps as a reference to the "Let it go" lines that are an important part of both songs. The song was performed at the only Linkin Park appearance of 2016, at the Mercedes-AMG C63 Coupe China Launch in Shanghai, China. This performance included only Chester and Joe, with Chester singing on top of a pre-recorded live instrumental.

Lyrics

Live Version

I dreamed I was missing
You were so scared
But no one would listen
Cause no one else cared
After my dreaming
I woke with this fear
What am I leaving
When I'm done here
So if you're asking me I want you to know

When my time comes
Forget the wrong that I've done
Help me leave behind some
Reasons to be missed
And don't resent me
And when you're feeling empty
Keep me in your memory
Leave out all the rest
Leave out all the rest

I close both locks below the window
I close both blinds and turn away
Sometimes solutions aren't so simple
Sometimes goodbye's the only way

And the sun will set for you
The sun will set for you
And the shadow of the day
Will embrace the world in grey
And the sun will set for you

Do you feel cold and lost in desperation?
You build up hope, but failure's all you've known
Remember all the sadness and frustration
And let it go

Let it go [x2]
Let it go / Woah, oh
Let it go

Do you feel cold and lost in desperation? (Oh)
You build up hope, but failure's all you've known
Remember all the sadness and frustration
And let it go
Let it go
