Background

LP Underground 11 (stylized as LP Underground Eleven on the artwork) is the eleventh CD released by Linkin Park for their fanclub, the LP Underground. It was released on November 15, 2011 to coincide with the release of LPU 11. The album contains ten demos ranging from the pre-Hybrid Theory recording sessions to the A Thousand Suns recording sessions.

Writing and Recording

The ten-track CD contains demos taken from all of the band's recording cycles until then. "Slip" and "Esaul", being written before Chester Bennington joined the band and the recordings (with Chester) of those two songs and "Blue" pre-dating the Hybrid Theory sessions. An early demo of "In The End" is also included. "Soundtrack", "Program", and "Broken Foot" dates from the Meteora sessions; "YO" and "Bang Three" from the Minutes To Midnight sessions; and "Robot Boy" from the A Thousand Suns sessions.

Composition

All of demos on the album provide an insight to how the band recorded each album. For example, all of the Meteora-era tracks are purely instrumental because, at the time, the band wouldn't create vocals for a track until it was considered finished.

The album brings early alternative and demo versions of previously released songs such as "In The End", "A Place For My Head", "What I've Done", and "Robot Boy" as well as "Blue", a song which was eventually reworked into "Crawling". All those tracks shows how much a song can change during the recording process of Linkin Park's albums.

The album also brings full versions of two instrumental demos that had been previously heard by fans: "Program" can be heard during the Frat Party At The Pankake Festival DVD and a clip of "YO" had been released by the band as a ringtone in 2010.[1]

Trivia

  • The dating of 1998 for "Slip" and "Blue" has led to arguments on when Chester joined the band, as it contradicted previous interviews where the band claimed Chester joined in 1999.
