Background

"CoronaVirus Jam 3.18.20" is a song by Mike Shinoda made during the 2020 global COVID-19 pandemic.

In March 2020, the global pandemic created by the COVID-19 coronavirus caused communities to quarantine at home. During this time, Mike Shinoda decided to start live streaming online and inviting fans to watch him create new instrumental music.

"CoronaVirus Jam 3.18.20" was a track made by Mike on March 18, 2020, making it one of his oldest CoronaJams done via streaming. This when he was still calling his streams "Beat Making Demos" instead of "CoronaJams" and still streaming from his iPhone on Instagram Live with a one hour time limit.[1]

Mike said, "We'll do it in just Maschine, keep it kind of easy. When I was growing up, when I was first getting started producing, I used this sampler here which is an Akai S-900, which is like a 12-bit sampler. I got it because I think I heard DJ Premiere and maybe RZA from Wu-Tang used it. So that was my original one but I tried to boot it back up, I put it in the rack and I was going to boot it up, and then it didn't work. It kept like crashing and freezing and stuff. Then I just bought this MPC 60 which is basically the same kind of hardware, just a different format. And they like went to the pads and stuff. And I would use that this morning to do this but it's a little slow because of the way they did it back then, the interface wasn't very high tech yet."

Mike ended the stream after 51 minutes, pretty close to the one hour cut off time for Instagram Live.

Release

On March 19, 2020, the track was released via Community to fans for free along with the demo of "Open Door." Mike said, "I'm about to put this up on my socials, but you get to have it first. Open Door mp3, instrumental, audio stems... and the Corona Instrumental jam from yesterday! Enjoy."[2]
