"The Last Line" is the twentieth first track on the soundtrack album Mall (Music From The Motion Picture) by Chester Bennington, Dave Farrell, Joe Hahn, Mike Shinoda & Alec Puro.

Background

"Ammosick" was a demo created during the Minutes To Midnight sessions. The title of the track can be seen written on one of the band's song boards during the The Making Of Minutes To Midnight documentary.

The song was later revisited and reworked during the A Thousand Suns sessions. On the Meeting Of A Thousand Suns, the title can be seen on the song boards along with an alternative title, "The Last Line".

When working on the soundtrack for Joe's film Mall with Alec Puro, the band revisited the song once again. The song can be heard at two moments during the film, one of them being the beginning of the closing credits, where it is followed by "Dancer". The version heard during the film was leaked on YouTube on September 7, 2014 under the title "Mall Theme". It is a demo version and has a different vocal take and different lyrics in the second verse.

When asked why the song was released on Mall and not on Minutes To Midnight or A Thousand Suns, Mike said, "I felt like, I liked it and thought that it belong... it should have gone out during the Minutes to Midnight era. And then it just didn't seem to fit the thematic stuff on A Thousand Suns. So that's why. And then we were like putting The Mall thing together and we were like, "Oh we have that song, that song is so good, that will fit here." It just felt like it would fit."[1]

In October 2014, while Linkin Park was touring in Brazil, Mike Shinoda started to mix the soundtrack for a release.[2] Although the song was credited as "Ammosick" on the film, its title was changed to "The Last Line" for the album. Not only does the album version of the song have a different mix from the previously leaked version, but it also contains different lyrics in the second verse.

Despite Mike being credited for mixing all other songs on the album, "The Last Line" was credited to Neal Avron, who also mixed Minutes To Midnight and A Thousand Suns. Additionally, Rick Rubin, who produced both albums, is credited as a producer on the song with Mike.

Lyrics

The Last Line

This is the first line here
This is the first line again
Watch as it disappears
I know the last line
The last line will never pull me in

This is the next line here
This is the next line again
You can forget I'm here
As if the last line
The last line is slowly closing in

Oh, oh [x4]

This is the last line here
This is the last line again
Watch as I disappear
I know the last line
The flat line goes here at the end

Ammosick

This is the first line here
This is the first line again
Watch as it disappears
I know the last line
The last line will never pull me in

This is the second line here
This is the second line again
Why does it feel like fear?
As if the last line
The last line is slowly closing in

Oh, oh [x4]

This is the last line here
This is the last line again
Watch as I disappear
I know the last line
The flat line goes here at the end
