Background

The remix was created by The Humble Brothers and features guest vocals by Jonathan Davis of Korn.

The very first version of the remix was created in 2001 and didn't have Davis' vocals. This version was released in November 20, 2001 as an easter egg on Frat Party At The Pankake Festival.

In 2010, a copy of the CD sent to The Humble Brothers containing the "One Step Closer" multitracks, named "One Step Closer" Parts, was sold on eBay for $6,500. The description of the product was:

"CD-Reference: *Warner Brothers Rec., February 7th, 2001 from DA-88 source, individual tracks, without timecode; not all DA-88 tapes had time code & none had a sync pop at the top, so all tracks are "wild",without accompanying time code.

Total time: 42 min & 42 seconds (TRT/43:42)"

The tracklist of the CD was the following:

1. Sample Snare/Kick 2:26
2. Snare /Hat 2:31
3. Toms L&R 2:06
4. Overheads L&R 2:32
5. Room Mics L&R 3:00
6. Bass DI/Bass Amp 2:55
7. Guitar Main 3:07
8. Guitar DBL L&R 2:26
9. Intro, Chorus, Bride Guitar/ Chester Lead Vocal 3:05
10. Chester Voc. Delay & Chorus (One Step Closer)/ Vocal Double 2:40
11. Chester Chorus 1 (Ever You Say To Me) Chester Double 1:50
12. Boops / Keys (Intro,br.) 1:52
13. Dist. Beat/ Turntable Joe 2:12
14. Hat / Screech 2:27
15. Hi Beep L&R 2:29
16. Click 95bpm 2:29

Speaking to MTV about the remix, Brad Delson said: "[The Humble Brothers] are from Canada, and they’re these amazing guys. We heard a remix they did of a Deftones song and we were like, ‘This is the sickest thing we’ve ever heard.’ They’re just one of those groups people haven’t found out about yet."

Even though Chester had worked with Jonathan Davis on the song "System" in late 2001 or early 2002, the version of the remix found on the February 2002 internal Warner Brothers Records CD titled "One Step Closer" Humble Brothers Remixes still lacked Davis' vocals. It's possible they were only recorded in March 2002, after Linkin Park and Korn shared the stage in Mexico City.

Davis has said "One Step Closer" is his favorite Linkin Park song, "One Step Closer has always been my favorite. Same thing, it introduced me to the band. I got to sing on it in Reanimation. When I heard it, it's like "Ohh this is cool. Finally a band that does something cool. It's not the same old stuff. I was stoked."[1]

Mike Shinoda added: "And as if the original version of “One Step Closer” wasn’t disturbed enough, bolstered with a new verse by Korn’s Davis, “1STP KLOSR” has an even darker, more morose vibe to it."

Some of the stock sounds used in the remix can also be heard during the films "Pokemon: The First Movie" and "Pitch Black".

Break…
I'm about to break!
I need room to breathe… (x3)

I cannot take this anymore
Saying everything I've said before
All these words, they make no sense
I found bliss in ignorance
Less I hear, the less you say
But you'll find that out anyway
I find the answers aren't so clear
Wish I could find a way to disappear
All these thoughts, they make no sense
I found bliss in ignorance
Nothing seems to go away
Over and over again (x5)
Just like before…

Everything you say to me
And I'm about to break!
I need a little room to breathe
I'm about to break!

Everything you say to me
And I'm about to break!
I need a little room to breathe
And I'm about to break!
Break!

These are the places where I can't feel
Torn from my body, my flesh it heals
During this ride we can cut up what we like
Waiting alone I can not resist
Feeling this hate I have never missed
Please someone give me a reason to rip off my face

Blood is a pouring and pouring and pouring…

Shut up when I'm talking to you!
Shut up! (blood is pouring)
Shut up! (blood is pouring)
Shut up! (blood is pouring)
Shut up when I'm talking to you!
Shut up! (blood is pouring)
Shut up! (blood is pouring)
Shut up! (blood is pouring)
Shut up! I'm about to break!

Everything you say to me
And I'm about to break
I need a little room to breathe
I'm about to break

Everything you say to me
And I'm about to break
I need a little room to breathe
And I'm about to…

Everything you say to me
Takes me one step closer to the edge
And I'm about to break
I need a little room to breathe
Cause I'm one step closer to the edge
And I'm about to break

Everything you say to me
Takes me one step closer to the edge
And I'm about to break
I need a little room to breathe
Cause I'm one step closer to the edge
And I'm about to…
