Background

"100 Degrees" is a track originally released by MTV as a part of Mike Shinoda's MTV VMA 2005 Score.

In 2005, Mike Shinoda and Lil Jon were asked to score that year's MTV Video Music Awards. Mike commented, "The challenge was that they needed variety. I did 10 tracks, a couple of them a lot of Linkin Park fans will recognise the sound, while others are different, all the way down to some really stripped-down hip-hop sounds. And within each piece, there are different parts."[1] They did not collaborate on any track.[2]

Short ringtones of five of Mike's songs were posted on MTV.com's "The Leak" for fans to download, and "100 Degrees" was one of them.[3][4]

In response to fans who started asking for the full score in early 2010, the tracks were uploaded to Mike Shinoda's SoundCloud page and made available for free download. However, the first track was labeled "Hive" instead of "100 Degrees". It is believed that the track was mislabeled and that the real "Hive" remains unreleased.

"100 Degrees" eventually became a full song with vocals and was released on Fort Minor's We Major mixtape in October 2005 as the first song. The version of the song on We Major features a rewind edit of the first verse by DJ Green Lantern, who hosted the mixtape.

As We Major was released to build hype for The Rising Tied, Mike starts off the song by saying, "Ladies and gentlemen I would like to welcome you to a Fort Minor event. The countdown has begun. The Rising Tied is almost here, but for now..."
